What will be a new "bitcoin" of 2020s? I don't mean another of hundreds of thousands of shitcoins, but something entirely different to cryptocurrencies.

3D printing. I dont know what the killer app will be but 3D printing is going to be big. The powers that be already know this but obviously they aren’t making it apparent. For that reason I’m not investing in 3D printing yet. Right now I think 3D printing is where computing was in the 1970s.

This is honestly the only reason I stay on this board, in the hopes one day this new thing is discussed here. I know crypto still has money making chances left in it but in many ways it feels like the ship has sailed. Problem is I can't even fathom what could replace it, half the allure of crypto is making money while laying in bed staring at your laptop, so whatever it is would have to be digital as well, which makes me wonder how different it could actually be to crypto. Vegan shit. Beyond Meat and Impossible Burgers are just the beginning. There's a bunch of companies now trying to perfect lab grown meat and dairy without actually needing to raise an animal. This also ties into the whole green push and climate emergency that may reach a head this decade.

Put any biases aside and you can clearly see that the future of food is going to be in the vein of Star Trek replicators. Needing hundreds of acres for meat is inefficient as fuck if science can just grow the parts people eat en masse. You can also be sure of this being the future now that Dems have taken all three seats in government. The future is unironically vegan and green energy, start putting your chips there now.

The new hype will be in either human bioengineering or space.

Bioeng companmies will get people hyped about life extension, cloning, designer babies, full-on Gattaca etc etc. China's gonna do it regardless, so it'll be hard to stop, and we have no moral anchor as a society anymore so sky's the limit. It's scary shit, but inevitable.

SpaceX will get people pumped about satellite internet and space tourism, and there's a good possibility they'll make good money for uncle sam playing footsie with the CCP during our new cold war. When you hear people talking about "Elon's gonna mine asteroids bruh, it's a new paradigm" the dumb money is in, so sell immediately.

Much like the dotcom, both are legit sectors but people think they're far closer than they really are so they'll bubble big.

I'm a developer and trying to figure it out. Bitcoin will pump beyond a million but it's literally a store of value, ie an expensive asset like gold. Plebs in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the 1st world are unlikely to use blockchains and crypto for payments but if they were to use something like that it's going to be a high circ token that will be "cheap", scalable and fast. So it's either going to be Cardano or Stellar.

Bitcoin was great tech but satoshi didn't account for how the low supply would turn it into tulipmania. The next bitcoin will probably be something that combines centralized and decentralized aspects of finance and stores value in a different way than the fiat system and current decentralized cryptocurrencies. I can tell you what it is but then the Feds would be up my ass.

if what you mean is something that will "take bitcoin's place" I think CKB could be a very good candidate, especially because it is based in China and is actually leaning INTO asic-based profit-maximizing PoW instead of trying to prevent it, and they basically are the only new team out there who are taking a firm stand on PoW and saying that PoS is cucked.

If you mean what is something that is going to completely take people by surprise, I have one in mind but I'm not done accumulating, but I'll give you this instead. I think there's a distinct possibility that Homomorphic Encryption, Trusted Executable Environments, Secure MPCs, etc could all make blockchains as we know them completely obsolete.

Revolutions to the financial system happen like that, on long timeframes

Somebody last year called Bitcoin the most significant financial innovation since the medicis invented double entry accounting, but desu I don't think it's THAT fundamental, still in the shadow of the internet
That's why I said the VOC, the next major financial revolution after that was (woefully) insurance and then central banking
