Networking is what makes job hopping viable. Otherwise you rely on headhunters to find you a job and it's a lot harder to move on a whim (or when you accidentally piss off your boss and the HR person at the same time and need to bounce asap).

The journaling bit is a bit over the top but as a major introvert it's what I have to do to make sure I'm actively networking. Obviously I don't do it in front of people, just in the evening after meeting someone new.

My workplace sucks at this. A lot of females. Few males. In fact I can count all the guys in my department on one hand. The women usually are bossy and backstab. Manager says she does not want that kind of environment but she is exactly like them and clearly enjoys the false sense of power she has over wagies.
