The optional part makes it a lot more versatile. Sometimes people want transparency, sometimes they don't. Why not give them a choice? It also makes it a lot easier for exchanges that have legal issues with privacy coins. They can just disable privacy features instead of de-listing the entire coin.

Bitcoin is awful for everyday usage because of its massive fees. Let's say you could go to the store and buy your groceries with Bitcoin, you'd be spending an extra $10-$20 fee and you'd be sitting there for upwards of an hour before the transaction cleared.

Whereas, other coins don't have that problem. If you bought your groceries with Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, etc, the fee would be a fraction of a penny and the transaction would be near-instant.

Or you could buy your groceries with monero so your grocer, people who sent you crypto, people you send crypto to, and the entire blockchain don't find out that you're actually paying a subscription to blacked.com on the side.
