it's a claim on a token. It is similar to how banks work: fractional reserve lending. It's also how centralized exchanges work: coinbase only has like 10k BTC or whatever, but they can service significantly more transactions because they fill the gap with digital IOUs.

Look up how options prices and derivatives contracts drive price action. Once you can purchase options contracts on wrapped tokens, I'll be looking into them. Until then, I consider them nothing more than an easy way to get some market exposure on non ERC tokens on the ERC-20 network.
