There's nothing wrong with a bit of playful speculation the same way there's nothing wrong with going to a casino with $500 and saying you'll either lose it all and not play more or leave when you're tired. I don't think I would label messing around with options as purely speculative because you can have a somewhat informed idea as to whether your calls are going to end up ITM or not, but it isn't something to spend a lot of money on in my opinion. I think it's better to do research and find good companies / industries that you can understand reasonably well, and put your money into these. Perusing financial filings and reading sell side research is an excellent way to learn more about investing. If you don't have a ton of free time, consider looking into various ETFs that give you exposure to whatever you want (e.g. SPY, VOO, CATH, anything but ARK, etc).

Something that was pretty valuable to me when I learned it is that there's a big difference between investing and trading. You see more of the latter on /biz/ and it can be fun / profitable, but treat it the same way as options - only trade or speculate with money that you can afford to lose.

If you want to get into value or growth investing, I'd recommend all of the following:

This money is mean for when you retire, and no one really brings this part up but fuck you may not live long enough to see retirement. I'm of the opinion to put in the max of what an employer matches, and not go over. The rest of the money goes into your "fun" account, with the goal of being able to retire early. Without getting too much into the weeds, M1 measures currency and coin, M2 includes all of that PLUS checkings & savings / money market accounts and a couple other assets defined as "near money". If I take $500 out of my savings account at an ATM, M1 increases by $500.

M2 is a slightly better definition of the money supply. The point you're getting at about inflation holds true, and I think every investor should be prudent and cautious about holding assets / cash in USD and Euros, but it's not the case that the Fed just printed 37% of our money supply this year and have simply done an expert job at controlling prices. Even split between pharma, tech, steel, uranium, crypto miners and oil.
Pharma and crypto miners and to some extent tech are what have me worried, everything else is greener than grass.
I'm changing strategy starting right now, I'm going to profit off wild swings in low volume OTC stocks that are at their lowest and use the money to average down my losing positions and sell their tiny bumps until it turns green.
