Is this true or is it a meme? Isn't a masters in physics from a prestigious school really valuable? They've got to put you through the wringer at UCLA.
I don't have a college degree, but I make a reasonable income as a private music teacher, just by having certain skills even without a credential. Surely, a master's degree program teaches you things that people will pay you to do.
Are you really bad at talking to people/interviewing? I'm pretty good at talking to people after spending a few years working at restaurants and bars, and I've gotten most of my jobs through friends and connections instead of official channels.

didn't you pick up any coding? learn some python and build a web server that does something dumb and you can get a job somewhere, if you are good at math/stats throw some data analysis in and plot some charts. hell it can even be crypto related.
>>25307391
you should be set even if you dont stay in academia if you have any sense, I have a neuroscience phd (heavy math/computational/informatics) and make very solid money now as a data scientist

But just imagine how efficiently you flip those burgers having a degree like that. Also you can replace your manager who probably just has a GED if he's lucky

Apply to jobs in finance if the degree wasn’t just a complete meme (quant/trading). Quants make 200K+ starting easily and especially big banks like physics majors for the cachet.

Pure math I could see being a hard sell but applied math experts who can actually produce legible work can be gold for corporations, so try to keep a foot in that world. Programming is a value multiplier, if you are interested in crypto/finance honestly I'd recommend looking at python libraries that let you download timeseries, do stats/signal work on that. little projects like that are better than any comp sci course.

Physics major here,
don't feel bad about having a wagecage job right now. I remember right out of undergraduate I worked in a call center for a few months after I left this shitty startup that didn't pay me anything, was awful.

I did L33tcode challenges and taught myself to be better at programming. I applied to a bunch of jobs and internships and put together a list of completed projects I could show off to recruiters. An internship recruiter was interested in a project I worked on (combined quantum computing and machine learning) and I landed an internship that provided financial benefits while attending.

After the internship, I was again jobless but the connections I made through it proved fruitful and before long I was employed and for once had finally broken out of poverty.

It's hard, I get it, the system we live in is unfair and doesn't really make sense at times. But its what we're living in now, I would never knock my degree in physics (way better than CS imo) because while it might be a bit more of an adventure to find a job with it, you will be far more niche than CS normies and that usually ends up meaning you will be paid more. (plus physics is just awesome and much more interesting/fundamental than CS.)

It always depends on what field of swe you go into. In some fields a CS degree is a must, but if it’s another web dev job then probably not.

Jesus Christ, should I kill myself? I'm 18 and have free college and threw out a lot of money that I made, chemical engineering is what I'm in and I don't think I'll get anywhere with it
I have a 70 year old British friend who lives near me who has a phd in some chemistry/physics study who basically became a Pascal coder in Britain and ended up doing nothing that involved his education, and eventually moved to the U.S. and lives shit poor and alone, as his wife recently died as well.
I don't see the point, I had a couple of chances to make a shit ton of money so far in my short time in crypto but fucked it up good, along with my life, I don't see why I should suffer the rest of my life
