Many of my friends that I try to get interested in investing seem too scared. They think the "safe" bet is to just work a 40+ hour a week job and save like 5% of what they make. It took me awhile to break away from that mold though. Realizing that pensions/401k from employers are just mandatory savings plans because the majority of employees are too stupid to be smart with their own money.

You're onto something significant, actually. Education is the most important factor in escaping poverty. So the people in your neighborhood who were never taught how to use a computer won't be able to further develop themselves or find decent jobs. Impoverished neighborhoods tend to only get poorer since the public school system is funded by their taxes. In fact, some schools see themselves only as a glorified daycare and as such don't even try to teach.

Yes, the information for building wealth and personal finance is out there but, if a person doesn't know it's there (or have prerequisite knowledge), then it's useless to them. Furthermore, things like investing have a high barrier to entry cost that poor people obviously don't have.

So again, for a person living paycheck to paycheck (In the US, this is more than 50% of the population) employing even the most basic financial strategies can be impossible (Can't save money if you don't have any to put away). In other words, telling a poor person to save up is like telling them to eat cake instead of bread.

As a side note, self-growth takes a lot of time that poor people might not have, especially if they're working multiple jobs, raising kids and/or taking care of sick & elderly family members.
