I'm a chemist who has become familiar with a relatively unknown class of materials, and I think that I have some excellent and marketable applications in mind
but I'm worried that they're already marketed or at least in the works.

I can't find any retail products that contain these materials, many are alluded to in academic papers but the commercial potential of them seems to still be untapped.

My question is this: If I have a product in mind that I know isn't currently marketed or patented, but seems like a fairly obvious application, how to determine if pursuing this is worth the time? I feel like my ideas have either been considered, fully tested, and found to be unfeasible, or will be brought to market 15 minutes before me by some large corporation with teams of hundreds of people who are paid to sit around all day and dream up shit like this.

About a decade has gone by since the patents for the materials themselves were secured, but it's been quiet on the front up to now.

just patent the applications of this material now

if it becomes popular either licence it out or become a patent troll

Is it Rhodesian mud? If so you’re too late, the huts are being constructed as we speak.

I would treat this like investigative research project and talk to those with academic/industry ties. Grad students would be best to form relationships with.
