24843442 No.24843442 [Reply] [Original]

I just accepted a 1-year contract for an internal IT position. At every stage of the process, the team leads and managers confirmed that there were no full-time positions in the pipeline, but "maybe a year from now".

The afternoon that I accepted the offer, they posted up two new postings for full-time positions. The exact same job and title that I accepted, just full-time. What the fuck.

Would it be awkward if I applied? I feel like it would start me off on the wrong foot with my new boss. But I feel like I'm getting absolutely fucked here - if I go for it, I'm making a bad first impression, if I just wait, I'm taking a huge risk towards my livelihood.

FUCK HR.

most likely HR published those reqs so they can legally outsource them to a 3rd party contracting firm. I fell for this scam once back when I first got started in IT...

Why not talk to your manager about it? Say you noticed the listing and are very interested in working full time. Might not even need to go through the process since after all they already liked you enough to hire you as a contractor.

>> No.24843489

Do it apply for it becuase this is your professional life dont fucking make decisions based on " this person might say this" or "boss might not like it" fuck that shit. It's not like you're doing something malicious. Do you want to be a success or not?

I'm thinking of sending my new manager a quick e-mail, asking if I could be considered for the position. This is in Higher Ed, and processes are exceptionally slow and bureaucratic, so I strongly doubt any sort of procedural bypass could be applied.

>>24843489
I agree that it's not malicious at all. I guess the worst thing they can do is say no. I just haven't communicated with him after the first interview, I don't want my first interaction after accepting his offer letter to basically be "hey, can I back out of my first acceptance?"

>>24843510
Damn. Yeah, it's very possible that I could be let go right after New Years. How fucked would that be.

I should add that I haven't started working with my new team yet, and my first day there is in January. That's why I haven't had any face time with my new boss yet.

Not sure what that guy meant, but bosses are hiring to fill holes in the organization. If you just filled one hole, why would you move the hole around?

It's a full-time position, just not a permanent ongoing one.

The difference with an ongoing position is that I won't have to be frantically scouring career boards from Sept to Dec making sure I can still eat in 2022.

Ah sorry, let me fill in the blanks. So regarding this contract to hire position and others. HR usually cuts reqs like these with no real intention to fill said roles.

Simplifying this a bit:
Contract positions can be thrown into the capital expense budget because the position can be bucketed under a project (e.g a contractor is hired for a certain project like a SCCM deployment or network refactor)

Full Time positions are filed under operational expenses because employee benefits salaries etc cannot be bucketized and wrote off during tax season for companies. It's just a cost of business.

>> No.24844919

>>24844898
Somewhat tipsy, I forgot to include this: No intention to promote the position to Full time. You can be a contractor that's full time (40 hours a week), but on the budget you are not given full time treatment such as preferred employee equity, preferred benefits, etc etc

>> No.24844960

>>24844898
>>24844919
Fuck, that's what I thought. But doesn't this violate GAAP?

Wait a second. Capitalizing expenses is more conservative because you have to amortize them over multiple periods, instead of being able to deduct the entire OpEx from net income that same year. So if you wanted to take a big bath, you'd want to load contract positions into OpEx anyways.

>> No.24845016

I don't know what any of these words mean, but I do know this:

HR exists to fuck contract workers.

>> No.24845027

>>24844960
It's 100% allowed under GAAP. And it really depends on your companies financials. Some investors like to see higher capex on your books than high opex spend, because capex spend shows that your company is investing money in growth rather than burning money to maintain operations / staying afloat. It's all one big bean counter game. Companies that spend most of their time doing financial engineering are not companies you really want to work at anyway.

Give your 100% in January-March to the current employer, you never know which opportunities arise if they like you. Spend your free time from April onwards scouring career boards. They put you in a position half-way between an independent contractor and a full-time employee - so think like an independent contractor and always look for the next client.

This is true, I worked jobs like this
Basically you work just like anybody else but no health insurance from the company, no benefits,no extras and you probably get an internal email that has .contractor in it
Literally scamming
