Go to the local union hall training center and find out when the next round of interviews are. During the interview they will ask, "Why should we bring you in." The correct answer, "Because I want to work more than anybody else that you are going to interview." That's it. Do that and you have a position for training. With an engineer background you will likely be a first round choice.

Training last up to three months, that will be unpaid. After that you start your apprenticeship. In my area first year apprentices get paid $25 an hour + benefits.

If need be go to a bank and show them you where accepted for apprenticeship training and ask for a small loan personal loan to cover your expenses for three months if you dont have enough savings. Make sure you speak face to face with a loan officer, not apply online. Just about every loan officer I know (and I know a bunch) will issue the loan np because union positions are practically gauranteed money.

The hardest part about being a plumber is the math. If you are an engineer you'll have no issues and the highest paying plumber positions require the most math so you'll be set for life. If you want to make a KILLING move to Alaska once you jave ypur journey and. Spend all winter fixing broken pipes which is a calewalk, take all summer off and enjoy your life. Or do what I do and sign up to go to remote job sites out in the wilderness and get pretty much permanent overtime pay and only work 6 mos out of the year and still make 6 figures kek.

Just want to balance out this positivity because I'm in the UK and we hate everything here.

it is (or at least was when I tried 10 years ago) fucking impossible to find an apprenticeship in the UK unless you already have a family member or friend already in a trade.
Also, UK apprentices got around £2.80 an hour when I was applying although I think that's up to about £4.50 now.
Then when fully qualified you be on £28k to £35k a year on average.
I actually never found an apprenticeship, and got fucking cucked into working for an electrician for free for a year for "work experience" with the understanding that I would be taken on as an apprentice when I finished my college course. Aced the exams and all of a sudden the company "changed management" and the took on no apprentices for the next couple of years.

This reminds me, I work for the NY state government as an investigator. I scored a 100 on the civil service exam, so was among the dozen people at the top of the list. They sent me a canvas letter asking what parts of the state I'd be willing to work in. I just put all of them down because I wanted the job. However I was living with my parents right outside of nyc and didn't really want to move away.

Get an interview up in syracuse for postings in watertown and rochester, both small cities in the ass end of the state. Might as well be on the other side of the country.

Did the interview but they hired 2 other people. A month later I get called in to interview for the NYC station and get the job. Funny how things work out, eh?

When I started there where guys in their 40's starting. Your not too late.

For pay on basic trades it goes-
>Electrician
>Ooerators (Heavy Equipment, they start lower but pay climbs fast)
>plumber
>carpenter
>labor
Pick the one that suits you, go to the union hall, ask when they are doing interviews for the apprenticeship. During the interview DO NOT LIE, if you got a felony tell them. They can smell bullshit from a mule away. When they ask why they should take you on as an apprentice say, "Because I want to work. I've got all my partying out, made all the mistakes I feel I need to make and now I just want to go to learn a skill that will take care of me and my family. You should bring me on because no one wants this apprenticeship more than I do." I was a car salesman that never worked a day in his life and had zero skills. They dont care about that. The apprenticeship gives you the skills you need. Carpenter is good if you like being out in the open air most of the time. Up here carpenter apprenticeship starts at 21 an hour + benefits. Dont be afraid to apply to all the unions for all the trades though. They talk to each other and compare notes. Applying to all when you dont jave any particular skills shows you are doing everything you can to find work and they like that. All they really care about is that you are smart enough to do the job and will always show up to work every day. Convince them you are that person and they will take you in for training.

I was actually accepted into the carpenters union first, I worked my ass off during training and they could see I wanted to work, but I popped for marijuana on the piss test when the results came back about 3 weeks after training started. I thought I was clean but I hadn't given it enough time and they had to drop me. Plumbers union was the next set of interviews I had lined up. (I applied for every union) and the master carpenter said he would take me next year if the plumbers union turned me down.
I interviewed, got accepted and was clean for the test so I stayed and the rest is history.
