What I don't like about debt is that it means I always have to be working and that somebody else has control/lien/interest over my possessions because I don't technically own them until they're paid off.

If I lost my job but had no debt and no expenses besides food and electricity, I could choose a simple life and work part time 10-20 hours a week. I would work less, have less money, but I would be happier because I'd have more free time for hobbies and when I'm off the clock I don't think about work.

Instead, if you're leveraged to the tits with cheap credit, you always need to keep maxing out your career and playing the rat race just to have enough income to make your monthly payments. Even if you have enough saved up to not have to work for a year, and you think you'll just take a mini retirement or a sabbatical, the longest you go without using your career the hardest it is to get back.

People like to say "don't pay off debt, use the cheap credit and invest the rest, it's free money" but they assume you'll always have your income. There is nothing that quite makes you shit your pants and spiral into depression and suicidal thoughts like losing your income when they monthly payments come due.
