You start low like 45-50k but you will be up to mid 70s in four years without having to negotiate salary or anything. Meanwhile you will still probably be at 60k. Cadillac benefits 3 weeks vacation 2 weeks sick pension most important no weekends 40 hour weeks.

Maybe I could see if you were in a high col government salary does not transition but if you are low col you are absolute cuck dyor. Trust me if you do you will be thinking of this post once a month min for the rest of your life I fucking saved you bro

This is probably what I'm most worried about. I'm pretty introverted and prefer sitting back and letting the other person carry the convo. Hopefully that doesn't fuck me over

Again, government pay is shit. I just double checked, and they start you at GS-5 pay which is 33,979 to $44,176 depending on COL. I'd join the FBI or CIA if I choose the government route.

There's no fucking way they're starting auditors at 30k. Maybe that was a secretary position or something but not a college educated accountant. I have a friend that just started at 75 in Pittsburgh but he had 5 years work experience.

Is the work just a total mindfuck or is is boring, repetitive work? My plan is to stay until senior before moving to industry.

>> No.24787371

>>24787165
at the staff 1 level it's mind numbingly stupid 80% of the time with long hours. the other 20% of the time it's more complicated and aggravating, like control walkthroughs, tests of controls, and documenting shit in an asinine and very specific way because muh firm guidance and because your senior and manager are dumb overworked niggers with minimal management skills and no teaching ability but they want you to read their mind and document it like they want it documented.

ultimately i realized the salary was shit, i was tired of being forced to travel 2-3 hours a day round-trip, and every bit of work i did was meaningless. i saw "big" findings that we spent hours and hours documenting and discussing get swept under the rug by the senior manager and partner a few weeks before filing, because the audit fee was more important than nailing the client for shady ass accounting practices that materially misstated the financials. right before i left i was told i would be acting senior on yet another shitty private client with garbage accounting practices (all the work of a senior and none of the pay) so i got the fuck out ASAP.

do 1-2 years and get an industry job that pays 20% more with 40 hour work week. or go back to school or teach yourself how to code. i did the former, now i'm doing the latter.

>> No.24787386

I got a masters in accounting and worked for a large manufacturer in AP for 60k plus great benefits and all I did was process invoices through their automated system all day long. Got laid off due to covid and now I am doing treasury/budgeting (fund accounting) for a large wealth management firm.

I hate my job so much I'm kind of hoping I get fired but I can't imagine any office/"college" job I would actually enjoy. Looking at excel spreadsheets and outdated web-based accounting systems all day is melting my mind. Basically Kaczynski was right, I want out.

I did audit at PwC for about 3 years, so happy to answer whatever questions I can

It’s worth doing if you don’t know what you want to do with your life yet. You’ll get experience across a variety of fields if you’re in a smaller office, or specialise in one you’re interested in if it’s a bigger office (major city). Looks great on your resume, and you won’t have any issues jumping to industry for a 25-75% pay rise anytime after the first year

Hours are fucked though, and the work is super fucking boring, a monkey could do most of the shit consultants do. People go on about how the best part of big 4 is the people, but I found most of the guys I worked with to be so far up their own ass it was hilarious. Working 80 hours a week for 60k a year and they have an ego about it because of the name on their payslip.

I’d recommend roughing it out for 12 months minimum, or if you can, until you make senior (usually 2-3 years). I left for a risk role after 3 years, make just under 100k in a low cost of living area, and am lucky to do 20 hours of actual work per week now.

Well fuck that sounds depressing. Everyone at my school hoped to get into the big 4 for the "prestige," and I felt so lucky that I was chosen for the job. I'm doing tax, not audit, so the bullshit client interaction and travel aspect is minimal from what I've heard. I'm either going to start my own small firm or get an MBA down the road. Thanks for your story though. I at least know what I'm getting myself into.

Get as many certifications and clearances as you can in two years then bounce to one of the others for a big salary boost

>> No.24787618

>>24787567
if you're a normie you might like it. normies tend to cope with stupid work and long hours better than others, because they think big 4 is prestigious. i'm not a normie and i hated it.

i'm an industry accountant, it's not bad. i don't mind the work itself. what bothers me is 1) the pay is shitty ($70k in central NJ) and 2) there's no remote work culture in accounting. i've been wfh since chink flu started and i might kill myself when we have to go back to the office. so that's why i'm trying to lern2code, i want more money and i want to one day never step foot in an office again.

I'm kind of a poltard and have an interest in politics and history but also come to /biz/ to learn about crypto. I wouldn't consider myself a normie by any means, but I can handle boring, repetitive work. I'm hearing that internal auditors can do most of their work from home, so you should look into that if you wanna do wfh full-time.

Best advice is if you get given work you don’t know how to do, ask your senior or someone else to run through it with you for 5-10 minutes

Most seniors are fucking terrible, or at best strapped for time and will just give you work and tell you to follow what was done in prior year. Half the time what was done in prior year is wrong, and you’ll look like an idiot if the manager asks you why you did it this way, and you say “because that’s how we did it last year”

If you ask your senior to book in some time to run through the task up front, you can get an idea of what they expect to be done, any changes there should be from prior year, anything missing etc. If they won’t help you upfront, that’s on them not you when the manager questions it

Apart from that, it fucking sucks but you need to suck up to your managers/seniors and partners when they’re there. It’s more in important in Big 4 than just about anywhere. In industry you might have one manager, and be competing with 1-2 others for promotions. In big 4, you can have a dozen different managers and be competing with dozens of other consultants. All it takes is one manager not to like you for you to miss out on a promotion, learnt that from experience.

Also, idk what big 4 you’re at, but at PwC we had to submit requests for a review after each job from the manager. For these, book in 15 minutes with the manager to do this in person. They’re much more likely to give you a good review if you’re right there in front of them compared to if you submit it and they do it 3 months later
