It's honestly fucking terrifying watching what is happening with the US and China at the moment. US is classic late empire, rich and decadent, but tearing itself apart with politics, blame and lack of unity. China is the rising power, unbelievably motivated, playing on a longer timescale than anyone, with a billion totally complicit, loyal, unified workers who value education and hard work. Also the manufacturing centre, which is what brought the US to the top in the first place.
Any metric that the US leads China is diminishing at an astonishing pace, and they've realised they don't need more front facing military power in the modern era, when they can win the economic war on every front.
As an Australian who has been safe under America's wing for my entire life, I think the loss of Western ascendancy is going to be catastrophic for pretty much everyone who isn't Chinese.

I agree that they woke the beast, but now it's running on its own momentum. Everything from building the 5G infrastructure for the entire planet, to Belt and Road, to their "investments" in everywhere from Africa to the Pacific Islands, China's growth and expansion is fucking terrifying. The West is not keeping up. We don't have the hunger that an emerging power has, we've been comfortable too long.
I wish it wasn't this way, I look what's happening to the Uighurs and fear for my kids and future generations.
