Stellar was created as competition for XRP. The creator, Jed something, was originally a founder of xrp but was kicked out for being an idiot. He tried dumping his xrp but Ripple sued and took control of his share only to release it over a fixed period of time.

Jed went and created Stellar in his furry and had been pumping his xrp profits into it since the beginning.
