But man, as a customer I've never really had a complaint about Gamestop. They'd do their spiel about game insurance and memberships, and I'd politely say no and that was the end of that, literally no different from any other big retail store. Physical games often run cheaper than digital, so if I was in the mood to buy a specific game then Gamestop was usually my best bet.

Trade-ins weren't the best way to make money off old games, but I figured you're selling to Gamestop to make a quick buck. You want to maximize your profit then go sell on eBay or Craigslist. But walking into a Gamestop is the quickest, easiest way to get some money for that game. There's a convenience charge baked into that trade-in value, and most things in life have some sort of convenience charge.

I do wish Gamestop adapted more. COVID keeping everyone apart notwithstanding, Gamestop should have shifted to be a social gathering spot. Hell, I go to comic shops and those will have the back set up for card games, and those two aren't even that related. Gamestop should have been shifting to hold local tournaments, to be a place where you can go to meet people with similar interests and play a few games the way board game shops operate.

People always say support mom and pop shops, but that's not always super doable. Where I live now, yeah there's several other video game shops. But in my hometown? Gamestop is it. If they go out of business, then people are just gonna get their games from Walmart, Target, Best Buy, or Amazon. Is that really a lot better than Gamestop?

If Gamestop closes for good it's their own fault, but I won't celebrate it.
