A cheap classic that can be used as a reference for all the basic fundamentals of TA. This is what I would recommend.
Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets

The updated version, Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets, adds candlestick analysis, intermarket analysis and market profile.
Possibly worth it to have a basic reference for candlesticks and market profile, but it's about 3 times the price for a used copy.

I read a lot of TA books and if I was only going to keep one around, it would be one of these two.

Another classic is Technical Analysis of Stock Trends by Edwards and Magee, but you would want the 6th edition or below to avoid the additional contributions by Bassetti.

No, I don't think so. The core of TA is analyzing price action or how the patterns on the chart represent the buying and selling of the participants. I would argue these older books focus more on the fundamental aspects of this.

Indicators are the next layer up from the very basics of looking directly at the chart and they give another way to visualize price movement, but they are still one step removed and won't invalidate what's happening directly on the chart.

For computers I would mostly argue that they've made TA less useful than before on very small timeframes, but TA has always focused on the larger timeframes. If you look at the classical chart pattern descriptions in the Magee book, they are usually given in weeks or longer. Computers have probably made price action less natural, but an algorithm holding a losing position still has to react and unload the position.
