Any /biz/raelis here who have any predictions as to the outcome of this city? Brexit and covid is surely going to cause quite the economic ruckus, but will the city recover and remain a global financial hub or will it fall like the rest of the UK when the global fiat currency scam finally collapses?

This city has seemingly weathered almost every storm for the past 2,000 years, and to be frankly I do kind of miss the pulse of the city (unironically), but I'm not too sure if it is worth moving back there especially considering the UK is devoid of any economic substance in 2020 other than finance, law, and some tech.

I'm a tech worker in Ireland, with a brother in finance in London. You'd know about the trickle of headlines saying Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin are carving up former London EU business, and the EU finance chief has openly stated that Britain can't function as banker to the bloc post-exit. They have 18 months. I've been doing the best business of my life setting up datacenters for all the EU GDPR controlled data they're shifting here. Dublin has seen hundreds of banks arriving, in addition to the many already there. The IFSC is a regulatory zone which works the same way Canary Wharf does.

Reports from my brother are grim. The business districts of central London have been empty since April. Companies have trialled and adopted permanent WFH arrangements, and everybody's gotten used to working with other remote participants. The need to have a mega-hub to do this kind of work is shrinking. My brother's company is moving. The companies of everyone in his apartment block are moving.

Don't let the sharp edge of Brexit become dulled in your mind out of boredom with it. A first world, service exporting, goods importing, developed Western Democracy is about to completely reboot 99% of it's economic ties and revert to tariffs and checks, while dumping 40 years of legal foundation and regional harmony. Dublin already has a huge talentpool in IT thanks to already being a sectoral hub for that, and the IFSC was already quite large too. In a regulatory sense, Ireland is common law, where Europe is mostly civil law. Ireland has generally stood up well against regulatory overreaches (e.g. the Apple case) in court and fought it's corner.

As for what might limit Ireland, Dublin chronically needs high rise, decent transport and to free the city from the stranglehold of archaeic planning processes. My GF lives just outside the city near Shoreditch. Went to visit her recently and walking around you get a sense of how fucked it is. So many restaurants, shops, services etc, all rely on the city office workers and they are just not going to come back in the numbers they need. My GF works for one of the big 4 and they have been trying to incentivise people to go into the office with food vouchers and other schemes but everyone tells them to fuck off, who’s going to want to go commute into a ghost town again when they can WFH. Her company, being consultancy based have always been insistent on them being on site with clients but now, after successfully working remotely with no problems for several months, clients are more than happy for things to continue as they are, as of course they all prefer WFH too. I work in IT contracting and have worked in the city a lot over the years. Like the OP, I’ll miss the buzz. It gets a lot of slack, but if you earn good money, it is a fun place to be. The drinking culture in the city is fun for a few years, I had a few contracts where the boss would take you down the pub at mid day and a lot of times you never went back to the office. Good times. Largely though, the city is done. God knows what they will do with it all, maybe housing but who will want to live there...

(Greater) Londoner born and raised here. Where I was raised was a nice area with foreigners of different skin colours and they were pretty cool, so I grew up fairly ‘colour blind’ as you might say. Low crime, high median income area, all fine.
The paki, and some African degeneracy has been imported from nearby areas in recent years. Mostly school children shanking each other over weed. Feels like I’m in fucking Bradford or something. The white children now dress like they are in a rap music video with those fucking gay weed pouch things.
Besides that shit, finance has somewhat lost confidence in calling London their home, but the degeneracy race to the bottom doesn’t seem to affect this aspect that much. I often say to myself and close friends I want to leave the UK when I can but honestly the number of uncucked western places that aren’t Eastern European slums is fairly low, so I am probably going to wait out the next few years here. I have ties to the UK that make moving away difficult anyway. I take home £4k net a month (55k salary + £1000 from side income) and live quite nicely in a suped up large studio in a high-rise (full kitchen, huge bathroom) with gym facilities and all that jazz. I grew up in Finchley/Golders Green which is ironically the most Jewish area of the whole country (20%) and thus it was a pretty safe and leafy place to grow up in, if not quite dull. What people dont tend to realise about London is quite how different the boroughs can be, they are almost like that film "In Time" with Justin Timberlake where money=time and they carry in on their wrists. There are different 'Time Zones' which you see him drive through and each one slowly gets nicer and nicer until you get to the really rich zones. You go from Newham, Tower Hamlets, Peckham, Hackney then through to Islington, Camden, Barnet and finally to Kensington, Richmond and Westminster etc, its really is like going from the 3rd to the 2nd to the 1st world.

The problem is that as the demograpics worsen still these 2nd and 1st rate areas are being diversified and squeezed. Places like Enfield, Harrow and Kingston are alright for the moment but you can watch their degeneration in real time; in 10 years they will be the same as Newham and Dagenham etc.
What I cant predict is how long until the city is completely drowned by 3rd worlders - I think the WFH exodus is going to really ramp up white flight. Why live amongst filth when you no longer have to?

If anything it’s going the other way, ex social housing flats that people on the dole used to live in are selling for over £1m in some areas. The influx of people into London has been huge and as the central areas get more and more expensive these people moved into the shitter areas and gentrified them.
Take a look at kings cross 10 years ago and look at it now, Canary Wharf is literally a white ethno state. It’s actually all (the main wharf) private land with its own private security force.

The current trend doesn’t look like stopping and eventually the whole of Greater London will be gentrified, it’s where anyone with a decent iq in the U.K. wants to live at least once before they are 50.

As for the business aspect, London was a financial capital before the EU, and will be a financial capital after the EU has either collapsed or has regulated itself into penury. I've interviewed at a couple of City firms (like actual £150k+ starting salary jobs) over the last year, and I got the impression that they see Brexit as an opportunity for more business, not an obstacle. The City has a headstart of around thirty years on most European capitals in terms of servicing Russian/MENA/Chinese (and Asian in general) companies/high-value individuals, not to mention transatlantic links, and the fact that the UK is a pretty huge market in itself.

Manufacturers will move out of the UK, yes, but that was going to happen anyway: British people are extremely fucking lazy. Our labour regulations have increasingly made it pointless to try and maintain large workforces in the Midlands or the North when the same work can be done in Romania or Bulgaria for a fraction of the price, and any company moving production out of Britain on the basis of Brexit is just seizing upon the fact that it's better to say "we're leaving because of Brexit, you did this to yourselves :(" than "we're taking the jobs because you're a bunch of fucking retarded cunts".

The human capital/infrastructure advantage of London over places like Frankfurt or Paris is insurmountable. Add that to the fact that foreign executives want to take their wives and/or girlfriends to London so they can spend thousands of pounds of stupid shit and watch musicals (i.e. cultural dominance) and it's clear that it'll continue to be a massive financial capital for decades to come.

Comparatively, Britain's world-class education system is going to continue pumping people out (many of them European themselves) who have the credentials, arbitrary or not, to get jobs at the kind of top-flight services firms that drive the City's economy. That has always been London's main advantage over the rest of Europe, with regards to services; we have a school and university system that is ludicrously top-heavy and is geared towards pushing the most intelligent young people into globally competitive service jobs in London, plus tech. This is largely a terrible thing for the UK in terms of regional inequality/having an actual manufacturing base, but it makes London's position pretty much unassailable vis-a-vis other European cities.
