I just went to 7-11, and the cashier there had a "32 years of service" line on his name tag. How does something like that even happen? This guy seemed reasonably well-spoken and intelligent, has he just completely given up? I worked shitty cashier jobs when I was in highschool, but the second I found a job for more than $12/hr I was fucking gone, and now I don't even know how people survive on less than $25/hour.

How do you just work a shitty minimum wage job for 32 fucking years?

I have no idea OP but being one of those people was always my greatest fear. I worked retail for 3 months during the holidays once and that was it. Granted it isn't like the jobs I can get pay any more than $18/hr but it's better than being a fast food or retail wagie and I'm working on getting into better paying fields. I don't get it either considering you can just go on indeed and apply for hundreds of jobs that require barely any skills to perform. It would take what, a couple hours every day after work of studying for a couple months or so to get a tech certificate?

Comfort. They don’t want to take the risk with leaving and it being less comfortable than the current job. Fear of the unknown basically.

You underrated how difficult is it to get a job and it gets harder as you become older, if you don't have college or trade education it's even harder

for reference, when I was working there it was a fred meyers and they had a good wagie point system. You'd get points for doing things like stopping people at the door and asking if they needed help (basically seeing if they've stolen anything when the alarms go off) and you would get a good goy point. You also got these points if the other employees acknowledged your work ethic in some form.

needless to say I never got one, but one of the prizes you could redeem was 100 points and it was a gold (brass) nametag. I admit being the young impressionable and naive guy I was at the time the shiny gold nametag was appealing but after working retail on black friday, thanksgiving, christmas day, and the absolute garbage scheduling coupled with the nature of the work in dealing with the public it was one of the biggest blackpills of my life. For the record I didn't get a single good goy point for the entire duration of my stay

I am one of those people more or less. I basically live in my head and don't really care about anything besides my family.

The fact that this guy "seemed reasonably well-spoken and intelligent" makes me think he is dealing drugs and just has the part time job as a cover, or is exceptionally laid back and content with his life which is actually admirable. But I am gonna go with the former if I had to bet.

I mean, you can literally get a job operating a forklift in a warehouse or shipping/receiving yard here extremely easily and be making $20/hr minimum (I'm a leaf, so just minus 25% for USD amounts). Every warehouse job requires every new operator be retrained/tested anyways, so you don't even need a forklift ticket going in, since you have to get a new one at every company anyways.

Being a cashier at a gas station is like the least comfy job ever, lol. You're dealing with degenerates all day every day, quite often have to work holidays like Christmas, and if it's a 24 hour location you almost certainly have to work overnights sometimes

It's hard to get a job where you do nothing all day, but it's really not that hard to get a job where I am. We have an extreme labor shortage across basically all industries, and our cost of living is lower than basically anywhere else in Canada (probably the US too)

I was going to say this same thing. You don't know his situation. He could be making thousands a day pushing drugs out of the store.

if you are good at the job and it provides you with what you need out of it i dont see the problem

Say what you will about globalization and immigrants. This is the part I find weirdest about visiting the states. There are no well spoken 40yrold cashiers in Canada.
If your white and stupid at least you can always get a 70k job out in the field. Be it oil, lumber, or coal. And farming hands is at least 20 hr.

Ya this is pretty much a rule lol, which is why this guy threw me off so much. If he was just some 50-something year old degen I wouldn't even think twice, but you could almost just taste an entire life of wasted potential when he talked. It is pretty sad desu.
