None of that is true. You pay NO income tax if you make under $25k a year. Not one penny. You pay some Medicare and Social Security tax which totals like 6% of a paycheck but no income tax.
Money made on investments is typically either 0 or 15% although it is a bit complicated, depending on the type of investment and your income bracket, but if you are poor as you claim to be the tax will certainly be low.

They were withholding state and federal income taxes, which you would get back at the end of the year when you file your tax return. Withholding from your check is entirely optional and up to you, you can have them not withhold any. Usually the retard HR person will try to tell you not to do that, but it's the smart thing to do. Just don't expect to get a tax return.
It's also possible they were taking out money for a retirement account, local taxes (rare, only seen this in NYC), or union dues but it would detail that on your pay stub.
