The snapshot date is literally what you’re talking about; not the 6 months after the snapshot date. You need to have set up your wallet (if not keeping it on a participating exchange) before the snapshot happens. The Flare address must be specified BEFORE THE SNAPSHOT DATE.
The snapshot is checking that your wallet is setup correctly by searching for the fucking thing you add to your wallet for it to be able to participate in the drop. The snapshot is NOT checking your wallet balance. Your balance is checked at time of the DROP where you are immediately given 1:1 (could be more, dyor) spark to xrp. After the snapshot date you can sell, you can buy, but if you have nothing in your wallet at the time of the drop, you don’t get shit.

Refining this slightly from a few threads ago:

A realistic/non-schizo evaluation of required XRP price:
Target market is cross border transfers: $22trn
Given the liquidity of XRP and its intended use, you wouldn’t *need* a full 22trn for it to work (as not all XRP is being used at once).
So let’s say you need 5/6trn in liquidity.
Add in another 5/6 for growth/headroom and we’re at 10-12trn.
In order for XRP to cover that amount, the price would need to be between $100 and $120.
That’s the realistic minimum price.

* note the interbank transfers market (that is, including domestic transfers) is much higher than just the cross border piece, so if you include that (I don’t have figures, so haven’t), the required price would shoot up.

** I’ve assumed 100bn supply for ease, given some has been burned and some is tied up with retail, the real figure is lower, so that would pick up price.

Given that domestic transfers are likely much, much higher than cross border, I dare say once you take domestic transfers and the reduced supply into account, you’re probably looking at closer to $750-1k as the realistic required price.

How could they flip the switch? My own view is that they would either:

(i) split the market by giving a Ripple’s XRP to the BIS or Clearing houses, who would in turn only buy/sell at particular price - this would effectively give banks their own market which retail has no access to (though given the profit incentive, there would arise opportunities for retail to sell to banks/intermediaries for a small fee); or

(ii) simply announce that XRP is the standard and let market forces pump it. Perhaps this is the simpler method, but the inherent price volatility in the approach does not strike me as desirable (for the project); or

(iii) (the only other plausible sounding alternative) stop the dumping/manipulation, though I don’t know enough about the volumes, etc., to have any real idea whether that could actually get us there.

Options (ii) and (iii) could happen with market forces as the driver, meaning a relatively more gradual rise over a few days/weeks. Option (i) would be a switch from one second to the next.

I’d be interested in hearing from anyone else what you realistically think a switch flip would be? Any thoughts on how exactly it could happen?
