It launches 7 days after the goal is reached. It doesnt really matter if its by December or January.
Also the ETH going into the contract will grow exponencially as everyone is afraid of being first.
ETH is too big to fail at this point. If ETH fails it will bring everything down except for Bitcoin.
The code has been audicted recently and it seems to be fine. Its definetely not the shitshow ETH 1 was.
But by all means short it or be on the sidelines, its up to you.
