You're just gonna lose your money when it dips down that far and jumps back up.

Unless you're trading, you shouldn't care when the stock dips on no news. You should consider selling if some actual news comes that changes your mind about the stock, and makes you think that it is overvalued instead of undervalued.

If you niggas in this thread have an portfolio with lots of tech or biotech exposure, you're going to be feeling losses. I have about 35% of my portfolio in those sectors. Don't worry IF YOU ARE AN INVESTOR, its just a sell off. Companies like Google, Facebook, Netflix, and Tesla will all make these gains back shortly. Thees are all holds. Tesla would be the first to go tho in cause there is something more to this sell off than just market rotation by the institutions.

Rule number one of investing is that you NEVER sell a valuable asset just because of a loss in value with no news.

If you're a trader, than thats epic fail because you're gambling if you are trying to get greedy, and end up losing your gains.

>the money is lost
See, that's what I thought. The money isn't really "lost," it's only lost if you sell it then and you don't think the stock can recover. That's a decent answer though, I appreciate it. So the value of your assets is down, but not permanently unless you sell at that time (and obviously it could drop even more).

This type of logic turns 5% losses into 40% losses because you're too much of a bitch to cut your losses, admit you messed, up and stop the bleeding. One of the worst problems for retail investors, emotions get in the way.

>> No.239817

>>239793
You never know when the price will dip. It may go up first, and then dip after but still be in the black compared to where you would have sold it.

Also, if you are investing long term, then you have to hold for a year to get lower tax rates.

>>239803
If you're investing properly, you will never get 40% losses. If the price goes down, it just means your dividend reinvestment gives you even more value. Of course, if earnings suck and cause you to decide that you made a mistake in evaluating the companies worth, that's a different story. But selling just because the market drops a little and scares you is the very definition of trading with emotion.
