An index is a collection of (usually) companies.
The benefit of owning an index fund is twofold;

1) more than 98% of companies underperform their underlying index and guessing which the 2% are is extremely difficult. The solution is to own all companies by owning the index

2) fees are incredibly low because there is no need for a manager who decide what to buy and sell. the fund buy whatever is in the index and that's that.
