You can make it all back. BTC.D is bullish which means bitcoin is taking money from alts.
USE ONLY ALT/BTC pair, NOT ALT/USDT. It's way way safer since whether bitcoin goes up or down, alts will lose value in mid term. 1+ months.
WHEN:
split your funds to several stacks, each for a different alt. even if one trends up, the other will leave you winning.
split each stack to 5-10 pieces to short with every 4-6-12 hours, whatever the price is.
OR wait until bitcoin consolidates at the same area for a few days so alts can recover and you can short a local top.
DO NOT USE MORE THAN 3X MARGIN TO SHORT.
