Interesting work but I hate how the finance people affect the culture. If the middle 2-5 layers of management got taken out by COVID it would be nice. I’m interviewing with other companies and demand is basically unaffected by covid — actually it’s better for finance in particular as a lot of the hedge funds do better with high volatility. Trying to avoid finance now though.

Why is that? Also is data engineering harder than computer engineering?

I got a Masters in Accounting and I highly recommend it. Just don't fall for the big 4 meme. You can get a remote QuickBooks job that pays 50k easy. Everyone said it was ovetkill for me to get my masters just to do bookeeping all day but I automatically get the comfy remote gigs because you're overqualified for them.

>Why is that?
I’m in NYC with a nice resume and school I guess. It seems like we’re in some kind of eye of the storm where somehow the financial markets are fine, so everyone is just going on as normal or in some kind of suspended animation. Once the eviction/foreclosure moratoriums end everything is probably going to hell very quickly, so I’m trying to get out of finance before then. The culture in finance is to lie, paper over and ignore problems until they blow up, and then blame someone else.
>Also is data engineering harder than computer engineering?
Way, way, way easier. Software isn’t really even engineering IMO. Data engineering is barely above webshit in terms of difficulty. It’s just an inflated title.

Computer Science. Very good degree and you can move into much more than software development. I'm a Cyber Security Director, money is great (~240k), work is interesting & there's still plenty of growth to come in the industry.

I'm thinking CS is the best choice. A lot of people here are saying data engineering or fintech etc and that shit comes from CS. I don't believe i can get into computer engineering with just a CS degree though. What about outsourcing and automation? Are things really as bad as they say in CS? Isn't there a massive back log of people who can't get work?

I got a BS in International Affairs and became an army intel officer. My life fades with each passing day and I count the days until I can taste what freedom feels like.

I’m not sure what I want to do when I get out though. Part of me wants to get an MBA and make big money wageslaving. The other part wants to become a history teacher (I love history and enjoy teaching) and take the huge pay hit but take all the spare time during summer/holidays to work on a few side jobs that I could grow into larger operations.

And then another part just wants to get a boat and sail the world, working odd jobs to various ports to pay for maintenance I won’t be able to do myself.

The technology space is vast and there's plenty of skills shortages. Security & cloud are good examples on their own and finding people with both is a headache. That's just one example. Outsourcing & automation are factors but you can hedge your bets by moving into design & architecture on the development front (that isn't outsourced as often), or focusing on automating grunt work, which will land you work in orgs transitioning to new systems, processes, etc. Keeping up to date with technology developments & certifications can put you in a position to earn more before anyone can think about outsourcing. There's a ton of opportunity.

I have degrees in chemistry (useless) and pharmacy (absolutely based). It's been 5 years since I graduated and I'm set to make $185k by the end of this year + $12k in company stock. I'm single and live in a low cost area so 70% of my take-home pay goes to investments. My next step is real estate investing once I figure out all the variables.
The shittiest part about working in pharmacy is the lack of flexibility in my schedule since I work full time. Like my vacations have to be approved and planned months in advance. I couldn't just say that I want to take 2 or 3 weeks off next month to visit Asia.

Unless you go to a target school, do CS..
Here are the target schools:
Ivy Leagues
NYU
UChicago is good i think
UPenn because of Wharton
UCLA and UC Berkeley are good for the west coast
USC for west coast

Notre Dame
Georgetown, etc.

if you don't go to these schools, or some others which I may have omitted, don't do finance!!!

because trust me you won't end up working in IB or some other hotshot position, unless you have perfect gpa, worked a great internship or had a project that distinguishes you.
so if you dont end up in IB, what can you do?

youll end up as a shitty analyst working for min wage with progression to maybe 20-25$ an hour which is still mediocre or else youll have to transition into accounting which means you have to double down for a masters or self study CPA, etc.
maybe you go into real estate, or insurance, basically glorified sales.

Notice that most of these jobs don't really require a degree in finance. you could have been a sociologist or a communications major and done these jobs, all they really require is an IQ over 100 (maybe not even that) and to study for a license.
even many of the good jobs in finance require you to know python, SQL, etc. which many finance degrees DON'T prepare you for.

moreover many finance jobs or finance-adjacent jobs are going to be automated over the next 50 years
