I've posted this before a few weeks ago and received some good responses, but would like opinions from weekend /smg/ because it has quality discussion.

I'm 33 years old, married, and with a first child on the way. I have zero investments but make enough to comfortably support my family with my single income. Here's my plan:

>Company 401k matches up to 3%. Contribute 3% and put it 100% into SPY (their equivalent of SPY at a 0.25% expense ratio)

>Max out HSA contributions at $7,200 per year. Set aside what I think we will need for medical expenses and child care. Invest the rest 100% into SPY.

>Max out Roth IRA at $6000 per year. 50% QQQ 50% SPY, or 100% SPY.

>Brokerage account on Charles Schwab. Higher risk tolerance and receives any leftover capital. 50% SPY and possibly 25/25 QQQ/SOXX or 50% SPY and 50% ARKK. I'm not sure how confident I am with the ARK ETFs in relation to my risk tolerance.

I have two main objectives: I don't have to work my entire life and want my children to inherit the bulk of these gains. What do you think of this plan?

Here's the issue with ARK. Yes, it's fantastic and yes it is the current uber hotness but there have been many hot actively managed ETFs over the decades that outperformed everything. Then they regress to the mean. The key is that active management and it's always the achilles heal. When Peter Lynch left the Magellan Fund it faded into obscurity for example. When ARK drops the ball their shit will underperform and there is no guarantee they will get the mojo back.

Contrast that to a passively managed product like QQQ, SOXX, or XLK. These are based on simple formulas either broad based like QQQ or sectors like the other two. When NVDA or INTC or AMD takes its final shit it will be silently algorithmically dropped and something else will be added. What will ARK do when some of their investments go bad? Will they pick the right replacement? Who knows. It's actively managed and subject to many biases.
I would go 1/4 each QQQ, SOXX, SPY, XLK. If you want to live on the edge maybe 1/3 QLD, SSO, USD to get 2x leverage

You will be working your entire life if you're banking on whatever leftover investment income you have being enough to pay the bills if your all in SPY and the like. Unless you make like $500K a year, in which case carry on.

Other than that, your plan is full boomer mode, and if you consistently contribute in this manner and then don't blow it all on stupid shit in you geriatric years, your kids will have something, probably a lot of something, left. My only suggestion for improvement is to actually max out your 401k before dumping money into a normal brokerage account, ESPECIALLY since your plan is to do SPY, QQQ, and the like in the post-tax account.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate the insight into actively managed ETFs and perspective on ARK's success. If Tesla turns out to be a dud, will Cathie actually drop it? Who knows.

My personal brokerage account is looking for higher risk than SPY and possibly even QQQ. QQQ/SLO as 2x leveraged ETFs might be good choices. I need to honestly ask if I can stomach the volatility. If I can't, I probably have too much on the line.

>>23344176
>You will be working your entire life if you're banking on whatever leftover investment income you have being enough to pay the bills if your all in SPY and the like. Unless you make like $500K a year, in which case carry on.

I'm definitely making no pretenses about retiring before I'm 60 to 65. If I had started this in my 20's or before I was married, maybe. I don't have the capital or risk tolerance to toss much into GME or similar ventures. I make about $78k in the rural midwest, no debt, and own three properties. We live in one of them and rent the other two for a little over $1k per month. We don't live in a prosperous area.

I think my approach is skewed given how much sense your idea of maxing out the 401k makes. If I'm too risk-averse to go beyond SPY and QQQ in my normal brokerage and my goals are decades away, it makes more sense to do this in a 401k. However, I feel the need for the brokerage account to be relatively liquid and with a higher degree of risk/reward. Even if I'm 33 and have a family to consider now, I still hope I'm young enough and make enough (for my area) to have somewhat higher risk tolerance outside of my retirement accounts. Thanks for your thoughts.

you mentioned you have a high risk tolerance in your Schwab acct? Do you actually? It doesn't sound like it.
You should seriously do a risk questionnaire.
If you are are high risk you should have some exposure to small cap. Find a small cap etf. The % you would allocate to a small cap etf would depend if you actually are high risk. IMO The younger you are, with a high risk tolerance, you should have an allocation to small cap

Does the USA have a kids education savings acct? Us Leafs have a Registered Education Savings Plan, where the gov't contributes 20-25% on the first $2,500/yr. All gains are tax free and withdrawls are tax free to the kid if they attend uni or eligible trade school

Hey anons who've traded for a long time now. How did you get over the first loss, they say the first loss filters a lot of first time traders and they become too jaded to keep trying after they've lost.

I sat down and thought through everything I'd learned, every video I watched, every presumption I had and made a plan based on that and the recent loss. I promised myself that if I tried my new plan based on everything I'd done so far, if that new plan didn't work I'd give up on the whole thing since trading isn't for me. Just sock it all in an index fund and call it a day. If the plan worked, I'd build on that success slowly until I was where I wanted to be. The plan worked so here I am. I still have some setbacks but I have a foundation and as long as I keep working a plan that puts the odds in my favor I will win over the long term. Just be very careful and learn from every mistake but don't learn "too much". Even good plans take a crap occasionally so be careful taking lessons too quickly else you will avoid setups that win in the long term yet occasionally fail in the short term. Be as rational as you can about that cuz your emotions will get in the way and you'll get scared. Find an edge, learn from all of your mistakes, not too much, not too little but just enough. And work that edge. I started with $2500 and have middle 6 figures now and that's part of what made it happen.

Even if they do make you pay rent you have a couple things going for you.

>rent might be cheaper with your parents than with another landlord

>once the ronies are starting to clear out people will start looking for rooms, you can strike a deal with your parents and be their landlord for a cut in rent/not paying rent at all

$2500 was all I put in. It's been a combination of day trading the big swings on low float stocks and TSLA on the open. I look for stocks that make big moves in the pre market with lots of volume. My assumption is right at the open if the stock has mooned pre-market there will be sellers who want to take immediate profit. Using likely support (I use the eyeball method) I place a buy and a stop a bit below that. Often the buy will get hit with a quick insta-drop and then the stock will immediately pop back up for a bit where I sell. I also buy a lot of leveraged ETFs and sell call options on my shares but that was after I made enough money to do that with the first method.
>>23344939
Yes absolutely. You don't want something that looks like the perfect set up to go against you and the lesson you take is "that just doesn't work". Often it didn't work that time and it might not work the next time but in the long run it has positive expectancy. Every setup will lose money sometimes and some people get so scared of losing money that they don't want to take anything after a few losses. Ironically they lose more because the setups that offer the long term returns are ignored by them in favor of certain other traps that have a very high win rate but inevitably end up in catastrophic loss like averaging down. Many traders will start buying into momentum, trading with the trend, etc. and that stuff works but it does have a fairly high loss rate. They lose a few and are like fuck this, I'm going to buy the dip. They do and it wins a few times. Then the dip keeps going and they start averaging down usually without a stop loss. In this instance, they "learned" themselves into a blow up and more often than not the trader gives up and never comes back but will be happy to tell you that trading is "impossible".

Switch from LIBOR to SOFR, LIBOR is used as a reference point to determine the interest rate on a number of things, like options.

SOFR calculates interest a lot differently than LIBOR, https://www.sifma.org/resources/research/sofr-primer/ if you want to read about the calculations.

Basically banks are using a different system to calculate the interest on your options which can lead to a-lot of price volatility.

Pelosi doubling down tomorrow or caving and moving forward with stimulus?

>> No.23345400

>>23345302
Yeah that's really close. I usually look for something on the very first candle. Like I'll place a buy 0.5%-1% down on the open and if it doesn't get hit almost instantly I'll cancel it and that's it. Most of the time if it hits really fast like within the first few seconds it will instantly pop back up and I sell. I have a bracket order set up so when the buy triggers, it triggers a stop loss another 0.5%-1% down and a take profit, again, 0.5%-1% up.
The reason I use TSLA is this is a very reliable pattern and since TSLA has a large market cap there is plenty of volume and liquidity so I can go in with size. That protects me too since if my buy gets triggered and it doesn't pop back up I can get out on my stop loss without much slippage.
This works on a lot of single stocks though usually smaller ones. TSLA is special as a large cap in that it is stupid volatile. This is not something that reliably works with index stuff like SPY or TQQQ because indexes don't do that sudden drop then pop thing on the open. Usually when an index drops it keeps going. That's just the way it is.
If you start doing this and get good at it you will reliably bring in a few percent a week trading just the first minute or two of the open. This is above and beyond what you make doing other stuff so it's gravy. And remember, the quicker the buy and quicker the pop the better. This action is predicated on some big seller making a "mistake" or "fat finger drop" which the market then immediately corrects. One man does not make a market so if a single whale makes one dump like that the market fixes it. It's when this action takes place over several minutes that it's the market speaking and the market is very hard to beat systematically so I would stick to the really quick stuff. You can't beat the market but you can beat a different whale once a day almost every day.
