My mums partner (they are both about 80 now) had a stroke recently. I had to help her go through his financials to pay for nursing home care, I found out hes spunked about $220,000 away over a year.

He basically started trading with this Forex platform which is literally blacklisted by the FCA in the UK, and UK banks won't let you send money to them. They were obviously on the phone with him, and he managed to find ways around it via sending money through 3rd party money transfer services. He bought a lot of bitcoin via a fake looking exchange, I doubt he ever owned any or if he did, its all gone.

The company seems to have reeled him in promising him he was getting insane ROI from trades they were doing for him on his account. At one point they had him believing he was up £450,000. Then it literally went to near 0 from 2 "bad trades", but instead of trying to bail, he kept trying to fomo in even harder to "make it back". He kept liquidating assets and sending the money in, only for it to disappear down the drain. He almost released another $300,000 from shares he owned, but due to the bank losing the certificate and having to re-issue, he wasn't able to and the stroke ironically saved him from complete financial ruin.

>How do I help him? Why do people fall for these scams?

Google the name of this Forex trader, go to trustpilot, point out the hundreds of one star reviews from people screaming its a scam and they had their money stolen. Its plain as day, but people still fucking fall for it.

He said the guy was teaching him how to make (((1% a day returns))). I tried to explain to him that trading institutions pay people billions of dollars to make 6% a year. I tried to explain to him how the guy is a fraud. I tried explaining how 1% a day isn't possible. I tried everything and he told me his mentor is different because he has a Lamborghini.

He listens to (((trading gurus))) on youtube 24/7 and is thinking about quitting his job to trade full time even though he's losing money. He thinks that if he has more time to research trades he'll make a profit.

Sounds like he has a gambling addiction. Get him help.

Get him to think rationally. Let's say he starts with $1 and he gets 1% per day. (1.01)^3650 is 5.92 quadrillion. Ask him if it's reasonable that his mentor has a way to trade from 1 dollar to the entire world's wealth in 10 years. Tell him to make a paper trading account and show him how bad he actually is at trading. Tell him he should not play with real money until he consistently makes a profit with paper trading.

If that doesn't work ask your family to intervene. There is no way your family will let him piss all his money away.

My dad gets involved in so many of these get rich quick schemes, he's a fucking moron. I try to reason with him, I try to get him to just save and invest money into a Vanguard index fund or something like that because this is clearly all he can manage, but he always finds a way to fuck things up. He lost £30k on a shitcoin. He has gone £50k in debt because of a retarded internet business ideas. He lost £4k doing highly leveraged forex trading. He also follows these fucking gurus who scam desperate failures and retards going through midlife crises. Sometimes I fantasize about smashing in the head of these scammers. He also does tons of shit-tier courses which he never uses and most of the contents of these several thousand pound courses is really basic stuff that anyone who does 2 minutes of research on the internet would know. I would never say it to him, but I'm kind of ashamed to be related to someone that fucking stupid and pathetic. He works part time as a taxi driver and runs a shitty middleman business the rest of the time. The best investment he has ever made is the house we live in, that is literally the only appreciating asset he owns yet he keeps harassing my mother, who works full time as a carer because she had to get a job after he divorced her, about trying to sell the house, probably to waste all of it in another scam, I hate him, but hes also my dad.

Also, on a site note, FX is a risky market, you willl rekt your account at least 5 times (and thats with risk management and good strategies) before you start making actual money. With forex you need hell lot of experience and very strict rules, high capital and most importantly no emotions. Paper trading isn't the way to go, you won't learn to trade with fake money, because you there is no emotions attached and no sense of loosing money.
