I'm about to redpill you on these bad boys. $5 a pop. A carton of 18 eggs at Walmart goes for almost $4 in my area. Literally pays for itself in a matter of weeks. Get 3 and you eat breakfast for free daily.

I raised quail in my backyard for a little bit. Feed was expensive and they wasted most of it. The males crow and are about half as loud as a rooster. They also fuck the females all day to the point they lose their neck feathers until you cull the males. The feed also attracts rats and they will either get it off the ground or they will chew through your plastic buckets.

I would only suggest raising quail if you eat a lot of eggs, live out on a large plot of land with maybe feral cats, and have a cheap source of feed, and its still probably not worth it. Incubating them is hardly worth it as well, but they reach full maturation faster than chickens. Only incubate if you have a dedicated brooding room and you plan on brooding dozens or hundreds.

Turn the males into meat asap. Pulling their heads off isnt very pleasant either, and im a bit of a psychopath. Gutting and cleaning is also hardly worth it for the amount of meat you get. They are pretty tasty though.

>>23324755
yeah, I did this shit for years. honestly, not worth it unless you enjoy having them around. it's not like eggs are actually expensive. same energy as growing tomatoes. it's cool if your into the process....but it's more effort than it's worth if you're just trying to save a buck.

That all takes time and money still. Like I said it's not worth it. But I enjoy having them around. They wander around and shit all over a place that I plan to plant a garden in in a few years so it's all good. They are entertaining. I can sit there and watch them and the goats all walking around together. It's very soothing. Winter sucks though. I need to run water heaters and heating lamps. That's when it really makes no sense financially. But I still won't stop.

>> No.23325752

>> No.23325787

When I have extra I trade them with my neighbors. Eggs traded for fresh milk, potatoes, chicken meat, fence posts. Etc. If you're going to sell them then you'll probably find a neighbor who doesn't raise chickens. Almost no one raises them around me so it's easy to sell. But also the neighbors all miles away

Kek, I had goats too for a while. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but was a real pain in the ass to manage. Also had real winters too. I sold the homestead and moved to the burbs last year though. Bees and chickens I wouldn’t mind doing again.... cause I like it and their low maintenance chores.
