Is there anything similar to pic related going on now that I can buy and sell for 100x 20 years from now?

You won’t know until it happens. Some things seem like big collector fads that will pop off later and then disappear forever. As far as I can tell cards and comics have longevity on their side and then re: topic that is decided by Hollywood and TV. Pokémon being cards, toys, tv, video games, and movies it was bound to eventually have some valuable memorabilia and cards were a good bet though the original games and the Pokémon game boy also have decent value.

This will be similar to baseball cards and how only boomers pay ridiculous prices on them.

it's funny thinking about how many packs of these cards I tore into back in the day

>> No.23241910

Honestly I think only a few savants and autists could see this coming. Yeah sure an entire generation was heavily brainwashed in their youth (mine) but none of us really could see the card game becoming this nuts, at least thats the way I thought it played out. Circa 2015 cards were still selling for cheap prices and I thought the market would never take off if it didnt take off then. Well, I guess I'm eating my words.

The frustrating thing is that I have a binder full of pokemon 1st edition shadowless, I was really into the scene as a kid and have a whole bunch of super rare foils including Charizard/Blastoise/Venusaur but they all have chipping on the back.

Video games unironically. For example I bought Baten Kaitos 2 complete on the Gamecube earlier this year for $35 at vintage stock and now it’s going for over $100 on eBay. Back in high school, my brother bought me a Super Nintendo game brand new online for like $20 and now that same game goes for like $300 compete in box (stone protectors) and isn’t even a popular game at all. I probably have like 30-50k worth of video game stuff just from collecting over the years before it started to pop off. For some systems it’s still not too late

Actually $650 seems kind of cheap for a pack, I'm seeing PSA 9's and 10's selling for thousands. Each pack should contain a rare. I wouldnt sell a pack for anything less than $1,000 at this point.

>> No.23242159

Imagine collecting the 1st edition cards as a kid, immediately putting all fresh cards into a sleeve or binder, and then opening it up now and getting it graded. Could be potentially worth hundreds of thousands.

If anyone did that as a kid, mad jealous rn. All my cards are worn out I doubt they are worth anything more than a few hundred.

Are Pokemon card prices really crazy?I have a binder somewhere full of 1st edition and Holos. I was about 13 and had been collecting baseball cards for a long time at that point so I was really good about keeping them prestine. I would open a pack gently put them in a sleeve and then in the binder and that's literally the last time they were touched. Going to have to find that binder I guess...

Yes, they are, especially if you have 1st edition shadowless. It also depends on the popularity, a psa 5 blastoise will still sell for a few grand, but an Electabuzz has to be in really good condition 8+ for good money. But I got excited too and then I took a look at their condition and they arent worth as much as I thought. The big big money is psa 9 and 10 and they need to be nearly perfect.

I have lots of chipping on the back and that automatically makes them a 5 or 6 at best. You need to take a look at the back and look if there is chipping (white spots).

I don't know much about grading, but shouldn't most of mine be 8+ since they won't have any bent corners/wear since they've been in binders since day 1? Barring crazy off centers and chipping which I hope can't happen in a binder? Thanks for the info.

Yeah I guess it depends on how much you played around with them, I was a little kid like 10 years old when they came out and I played around with them and took them in and out of the binder. And when you do that theres a big chance of them chipping when they hit the pouch edges. Sucks! If I kept them in pristine condition I would be sitting on maybe a million. Good luck.

That's just it. If you know what's going to be hot in 20 years it defeats the purpose. These are hot because they're rare and no one thought to save them. In the 90s there was a massive comic boom because everyone saw Action comics #1 and the first Superman going for 100k±. So everyone thought they'd reproduce that with modern day comics hence the boom. Only problem was since everyone was doing it the comics weren't rare and were essentially worth shit.

So figure out what thing people really like but not a lot of people will hold onto. That'll be your collectible.

I'm buying up 1st edition yugioh and some more recent pokemon packs like evolutions. I still see them following the same trend as pokemon cards are just getting bigger, especially by younger kids. In 20 years, I expect the same price movement on newer cards.

Pokémon is a one in a million moonshot. It's the defining collectible of the millennial generation, it's merchandise sales are the highest in the industry and even dwarf Star Wars. They are the last physical collectible. Guaranteed. Zoomers didn't even get this kind of brainwashing as everything they have as children is virtual.

NFTs will be Zoomers collectibles.

Even modern Lego sets get updated so often you can buy whatever is in season and when stores stop selling them you can profit off the demand.

Are they fully boxed with their instruction manual? I’m not talking loose carts, but complete in box. Doesn’t have to be brand new sealed, just has to have everything it originally came with. The SNES boxes were cardboard so finding them in good condition these days is really hard as most people just threw them out back in the day. Same with Gameboy boxes. Like pokemon crystal complete in box goes for like $300-400

And the opportunity for collectibles is going to diminish as more and more of peoples' lives go online. All their hobbies and toys will be digital and infinitely replicable. Unless NFTs take off in a big way and I'm not convinced they will, simply for the reason you said - the collectible has to be a thing nobody thought to keep around, whereas NFTs are made specifically with collectability in mind (which makes them shit)
