Basically everyone is in agreement that 2nd layers are needed to scale a blockchain properly.
Monero doesn't have that yet, in fact their transaction schemes are more bloated than bitcoin's because of the added privacy.
Another issue is the changing of the security algorithm. This means monero will never have significant investment into securing the chain.
It will always be gaming computers and botnets instead of bitcoin's oil field flair and hydroelectric excess.

Monero is interesting and has the liquidity for drug sales, but will never be a major project.
