the reason bsv works while eth fails is bsv is UTXO based making it massively parallelizable
eth went the "account balance" route which means all nodes must maintain the state of the entire network.
if you can prove a smart contract interaction is valid using the merkle root of the recieved transaction and script (not op return) then you dont need to maintain the global state at all, solving all the scaling woes.

Most people have no idea of the actual cost of running an ETH node. If I recall you need terabytes of space. On the other extreme, we have CoreCucks with their dream of people running full nodes of raspberry pis. Something like a decent PC or workstation is fine in my opinion, it allows the network to scale but doesn't really hurt centralisation that much.
