My dad died not too long ago and he had a £1000ish metal detactor. How likely am I to find gold or silver with a metal detector in the UK or even just old coins and shit?
I don't really want to sell it but if it's got no use and it will just keep depreciating I may as well just sell it.

Just want to mention again to all the mining stock newbies, myself included, what I’ve learned from the PM industry experts like Rick Rule and David Morgan: junior miners will be one of the last things to move in a precious metals bull market, especially the silver juniors. Reposting:

I remember seeing people discuss mining in Finland here a dozen threads back, on the topic of changes to Finnish mining legislation. Pan Man for example pondered the political risks that might be involved in the future. I've been searching for a while and I've come across a lot of interesting articles and documents. Without going into too much detail, here's the facts in a nutshell. Public sentiment on mining is mostly neutral but on the negative side due to a couple of mining-related debacles in the near past. The Finnish Association For Nature Conservation however states that they're not explicitly against mining and that they simply want ecologically sustainable mining. In 7/2019, a citizens' initiative to amend the mining legislation reached the Finnish Parliament's Committee on Finance. The initiative proposed major changes to the mining legislation, which the Committee rejected, although they made their own proposals.

Proposals include: a mining tax(!); adequate resourcing for licensing/permitting authorities and transparency regarding licensing; and clearer mining legislation to protect environment, housing and other industries.

Other notable Committee statements relate to: minimizing environmental impact; assessing the need to clarify legislation related to indigenous rights in the Mining act; strengthening the influence of locals & landowners and the role of municipalities in mining-related decision-making; and forbidding exploration in nature conservation areas

---

The mining law update proposal is still being processed, and currently it seems like the new law is being watered down. A draft of the new law by the Ministry of Employment and Economy that was proposed recently got a negative response from the Greens, according to whom the new draft violates the Government program on 4 different accounts. The Ministry promises to update the new law accordingly.

The new law will be presented to the Parliament in December.

I wonder how much of that already exists in mining law and isn't necessary. A massive problem with Canada's mining regulations is that the same areas are constantly brought back up with new legislation that doesnt change anything or really effect anything in a new way. Recently for example, water discharge regulations were emended here in BC to require additional testing of waste water and other effluent discharged into the environment, especially when dealing with mine waste related sediments. However this has already been law and in practice for 5 years. I would not be surprised if regulations in Finland have similar issues.

A lot of it does exist but they want to clarify the law and improve it for environment, local community influence and indigenous tribes. This is because of a few mining-related debacles such as the motherfuckers at Dragon Mining who told their investors that they would "drain the metal from the ground before complaints from locals get processed" and the significant environmental impact caused by state-owned Talvivaara mine. The environment is a natural resource and an important value for us Finns, and damaging it is costly for us taxpayers, and this law is a reaction to mining-related problems in Finland

>Excuse my ignorance, but what are the point of proofs?

Originally, prior to the commodification and retailing of mass-produced proof coins, they were limited runs more honestly representing exemplary "artist's proofs" of the fresh hand-polished coin dies and planchets struck for a select list of recipients or in sub-1,000 quantities. 19th century proof coins are indeed rare and numismatically noteworthy so are worth collecting because of their scarcity and accrued historical interest. They weren't made specifically to be put in plastic encased sets and hawked through Littleton to millions of boomers, does that make sense?

~1950 through 2020 proofs were often mass-produced and certainly tend to be nowadays, so while attractive the modern proofs will never really appreciate in value due to their proofiness alone because of how obnoxiously common they are now.

Sorry for sperging on the subject but it's very important and most of you kiddos haven't been around coins long enough to really understand that there is a fundamental difference between an actual rare "artist's proof" coin and merely proof-grade coins mass produced for consumption by millions of plebs. Don't pay premiums for modern proofs unless it's entirely for personal pleasure, in general they are extremely poor investments and of absolutely no interest to the serious deep-pocketed collectors you need to have around to ensure your collection or investments appreciate.

Absolutely disgusting, but considering how China will counterfeit cargo containers full of chewed up clad coin (the Mint or Treasury buys back damaged coin at a set price per weight) the prospect of faking 40% halves would be a goldmine in comparison.

How bad or noticable were the counterfeit clad silver halves? I haven't come across any fake halves yet but have seen plenty of fake dollars. I've always wanted to collect the 1883 Hawaiian series but even worn dimes I'm suspicious of now. If nothing else the Chinese can always be counted on to really shit everything up.

The counterfeit metals cost maybe a few cents. The tools to make the coins cost alot more but they are a one time investment. After that they can churn out as many fake silver coins as they want. They turn a few cents worth of alloy into hundreds of dollars worth of coins. I buy kennedy halves for $3 each, so they are turning a profit of $3 for each coin they make. The hard part would be getting the counterfeit into the USA and Europe, but it seems they've got over that hurdle and fakes are starting to appear on the market in huge numbers now.

I buy kennedy halves for around $3 and war nickels for around $1. Chinks are making thousands of these coins as we speak for pennies.

Anyone have predictions regarding the trajectory of industrial metals? Because they're easy to melt down I've passively stacked lead and pewter (tin). Lead seems to be seeing decreasing usage and demand but tin is clean/safe and has always been a relatively valuable base metal, almost like "the poorer man's silver".

Pewter is generally 92% tin and above, I've seen up to 97%, and at $17,545.00/ton or about $9 a pound it adds up.

There is plenty of competition for silver at sales/markets but many overlook pewter and often big wall chargers or pitchers weighing pounds can be had for a buck or 2. You can literally just melt it in a pot on a stove if you wanted, then pour ~1 lb bars to sell on eBay for $10-$12 each to people casting nontoxic toy soldiers or whatever.

Scrapping silver is sexier but hoovering up cheap tin is something else to do when out hunting around for more exciting things, there is definitely a market for it and it's very easy to work with.

I think specific gravity would work on any purity of silver, you’d just have to do some research and high school level arithmetic to figure out the exact density of the alloyed coin in question.
