This does not mean that they „cracked“ the privacy from Monero, they applied and got play money to „crack“ it.
But they will fail. Thats it.

bullish Streisand Effect.
They didn't offer grants to crack ZEC, DASH, Bitcoin coinjoin, or tornado. Their anonymity pools are tiny compared to XMR.
The network effect of XMR is nearly insurmountable at this point. Monero's tech will never be obsolete because it's upgraded in regular hardforks.

How could one use Monero as a tool for avoiding paying crypto taxes? Let's assume that a person bought a lot of crypto using the typical USD>Crypto on-ramps, but doesn't want to use the same methods for cashing out because they report to the IRS. What would this person do and how might Monero help??

Wrong. I'm just a normal guy who wants to know how a normal guy might get out if paying crypto taxes, in minecraft of course.

The only thing that could stop Monero at this point is the NSA or a similar agency doing a DoS attack on the major miners (or just cutting their internet cable) while using their own huge server farms to take over the chain.

It could be used to damage the network by verifying a ton of fake transactions. This might end up being the next best thing if the gov decides it really doesn't like Monero.
