How hard is it to be a professional gambler?

Poker is 100% luck since the game is simple, repetitive and anyone with half of a brain knows all the tricks.

over a small number of hands, heads up poker is almost entirely luck, almost regardless of skill levels. over a large number of hands with many equally experienced players, it's also almost entirely luck.

Weird after thousands of heads up sit and gos ive got a 5.5% edge must be all luck lmao.

It’s difficult op i only played semi professional during college stopped about a year ago cause i was doing other things buddy who taught me was a big pro back in the day and hes played against almost every guy youve seen on tv holds a bracelet and some other watches from big tourneys. If you want to make like 60k a year you can do it easily but you gotta be smart and consistent for that kind of cash its a brutal grind. But moving up to the big leagues is a truly brutal grind as there is always someone who just straight outclasses you. You have to be willing to put in a tremendous amount of work and also have the gift of perseverance and cunning.

How good we talking? My buddy is one of the best in the world for poker.

He lives and breathes poker. Ever since we were 14 when pokerstars first got big he’s been going hard and has never stepped.

He’s also a math genius.

Live? The key here is to know the right people so you can get into very soft private games. And of course you have to be decent at poker (but nothing compared to online).

Online? VERY hard. Your time would most likely be better spent elsewhere. Online poker is dying and it takes and the people at the top (the ones making $100k+/ year) are extremely good and (for the most part) have been studying/ playing full time for years. It's by no means easy money. Even just beating small stakes for a decent winrate takes a lot of work.
If you're smart and hard-working enough to make it to high stakes nowadays (with little no/ experience as a pro) then you could probably make more money if you dedicated your time to studying, programming, trading etc.

The freedom is great but there's also a lot of stress (variance, having to play during weird hours if really good games run etc.) and it's a pretty lonely job.

t. have made 7 figures playing online poker against some of the best players in the world. I will most likely quit poker within 1-2 years because games are dying out and I'm moving on to new things.

That just means you're a fish/ break even

>> No.22679743

It's difficult getting started with online poker because the rake is insanely hard to beat at microstakes. If you have a bankroll then the game is not hard because you only play against retards (fish).
The difficult part is handling the swings. You can easily lose for months even if you are better than the people you play against.
I used to live with a poker player he could lose 12k dollars in an evening, he could have many bad evenings in a month.

Another problem is you are forced to play whenever fish is online, even if you are tired and badly in need of sleep / rest you keep playing if fish wants to play. It's taxing in the long run.

This is all true except
> If you have a bankroll then the game is not hard because you only play against retards (fish).
Games have gotten a lot tougher over the years. Almost all cash game tables have 5 "regs" (good players) and 1 fish. Even at low stakes. You will get crushed by the other regs + rake if you aren't any good.
Tournaments are softer than cash games but it's by no means easy money.
