It seems like you have way more of a horse in this fight than I do. I have said in other posts, if you JUST chase dividend yields that's not a good strategy. But, if you're going to try to talk me out of investing in a company because it pays a good dividend that just doesn't make sense to me. And the yields in some of these companies are fantastic.

I take a mixed strategy. Most of my cheerleading for dividends is coming from the fact that I think energy stocks (esp. oil) are incredibly undervalued, and therefore the dividend yields which are pushing 10% in a lot of cases are just icing on the cake. The core of my strategy is not to seek dividends, but again my entire point is that just because a company pays a great dividend yield does not mean it is a bad investment. In fact IMO it is a positive, not a negative. Of course dividends are not guaranteed historically growth outperforms dividend stocks, so on and so forth, but honestly if you look at what SPY actually IS, right now, its performance is completely tied to the idea that Big Tech will continue to grow indefinitely. Just for me personally, I would rather get into XOM and risk them cutting their dividend, with a massive potential upside in terms of both growth of the underlying asset and the dividend itself, than go buy some index fund when that index fund is dominated by 5 companies with ridiculous valuations.

Having said all that, I freely admit that most of my gains this year aren't from dividend stocks at all, and I'm glad I sold XOM at ~42 and rebought it at ~38. I'm open to the idea I'm wrong - I hedge accordingly.

REITs also often do well, but the returns structure is complicated (some is raw divvies, some is ROI, some is other forms of compensations). Similarly, MLPs have high divvies (but usually no growth, same as REITs mostly) but their tax implications may not make them as good as the yield suggests.
