Quick question,

Do cover letters really actually matter as part of resume?

Depends on the job. I've never had to write one in software engineering, for example

For new grads, absolutely. Separates the level headed people from the pajeets

If I receive a cover letter with the resume, it goes straight into the trash.

Let's say you're some HR cunt, right? I know most people on this board don't even want to imagine it but bear with me for a second here. It's 3:30 pm on a wednesday, you've been browsing facebook and sipping a $9 latte for the last 30 minutes some schmuck newfag got for you over break. Flipping through about 40 resumes in the span of half an hour you find a cover letter. You could read the letter OR you could just pick the blackest name you can find in the pile with even a hint of related experience and call it a day

Would YOU read the letter?

>> No.22587038

>>22586633
no but you should consider making money without a job before you commit to slavery

>> No.22587039

you're thinking about it in the wrong way. do you want the job? then why not utilize every chance you have to stand out? it's not "will i get away with not writing one" it's "how can I write one so that it elevates my chances beyond just my resume?" no matter who is looking at your application, they're still a person. you can influence them without them being aware of it through sheer force of personality

>> No.22587135

Yes they do, but you need to write a good one. You will get interviews just because of a cover letter.

Shit covers letters just expose you quicker so if you are a bullshitter maybe don’t write a cover letter, the more authentic the better

thanks. I guess I should rewrite the cover letter i ripped off of the internet.

>> No.22587383

I write one if I *really* like the position, but I'm not bothering for a meh job that's in my application carpet bombing. Btw I just reuse the same one every time.

Just get the free LinkedIn Premium trial and send in-mails to people who you think might be able to help you get a job. Tell them why you're curious about the company and don't lie. Find something true you can talk about. Send as many of these as you can.

Not sure what field you're in. I'm in finance/accounting. For anyone looking for a first corporate finance job, check out the Wall Street Oasis interview prep guide. You can find it for free online if you're industrious. Roll through their questions, make flash cards and study guides, but don't expect many technical questions. The preparation just makes you confident.

Regardless of field: If you are targeting a publicly-traded company, you should download the last few years of the investor relations materials, particularly the annual reports. These are filled with facts that will show that you can do the research, that you're interested enough to put in some work, and that you understand how the game is played.

Once you're on the phone with somebody, your goal is to show energy, focus, confidence, and intelligence. If I find someone like that, I'm hiring them. For your first few jobs out of college, we can teach you the rest once you get here. Can't teach you not to be a pothead. Just put in the work and do the research, and then on the phone try and be a real man. More than that, it's just a numbers game (unless there's any way for you to increase credentials/exp. on the side).

Don't be a faggot and write
>>22586857

But yeah don't think of it as some shit you have to write to check a box, just write a fucking letter to somebody to explain who you are and what you've done and why you want to work at this place. How fucking hard is that. and most retards will write the basic shit with some format or something
