Does this have something in common with perlin? I read an avalanche protocol whitepaper long time ago but do not remember if any coin was forged from that.

They didn't tho, From what i've seen so far it isn't really that impressive and nothing we haven't seen in the space so far. Avax have still unaddressed problems with the consensus which they plan to solve in the future, Rightnow it's not ready and probably will take years until it can compete with already established projects like DOT, Dfinity and Algo, If at all.

There's a reason not a single project showed interest in it, It's a new project built from scratch with unproven experience, It's not an attractive product at the moment, At least i don't see a reason to use it rightnow over other projects but this is just me.

The avalanche consensus is legit (tho like i said there are enough critical points that need to be solved) but the product is the thing you should worry about, You invest in the product not the consensus.

Avax get the hype because the team that wrote the consensus are partly in charge of building the product, which doesn't guarantee any success as it happened in the past with Ouroboros, Elastico etc.

Avalanche consensus. The network was named after the consensus protocol.

Its primary innovation is allowing thousands of nodes to take part in consensus instead of tens like DPOS or POW. Its also super scalable and fast as fuck.
