I'm self-employed. I make good money, but my "job" isn't a viable source of income long term. Also, it's pretty stressful.
My goal is $2MM (halfway there) = $70k/ year at a safe withdrawal rate of 3.5%. That's more than enough for me to live the kind of life I want to live. I don't do much consooming outside of travelling (or at least I used to travel a lot before covid).
After I reach my financial goal I hope to start some small comfy business. Perhaps a cafe, a bar or a some sort of specialty store. It has always been my dream to run my own small business. I don't really care if it's very profitable or not, I just want to create a business that (I feel) is valuable to society/ to other people.

I edited a typo.
'Withdrawal rate' does not mean you keep all you money in cash. It's the amount you plan on taking out of your investments every year (your "salary"). I obviously don't keep all of my money in cash. I have most of my money in stocks, an apartment I rent out, crypto and a bit of PMs/ PM stocks.
If you have a moderately risky portfolio you can expect a real return ( = after inflation) of 4-7%/ year. A 3.5% withdrawal rate is pretty safe. If you don't mind spending your principal you can do more than that and most likely be fine.

Americans sometimes dont have an idea how their currency is powerful nowadays. you can live like a king with 70k/year in most places in the world. I would dare to say that with 500k you are able to retire with a decent lifestyle in many places.

>> No.22462537

I'm not American. But yes, I agree, you can easily retire on 500k a live a pretty good life in South America, poor countries in Asia (.e.g Thailand), poor countries in eastern Europe (e.g. Romania) etc.

Doing this right now, but in Siberia. Already got the property. Living there 6 months per year on the multi-entry tourist visa. Plan A was this >>22461196 with about $200k in the MOEX where equities used to pay average dividends at 10%+ yields. Now they all got cut, so plan B is going to have to be options selling from my US brokerage accounts, and a few more years of wage-slaving...

That's a yuge area with tons of stuff to recommend. Personally I like forestry, rivers, lakes, mountains, and minimal people to bother me so I ended up in Altai Rep. Buratia also has more cool stuff, is more accessible, but also more popular. Both places are well equipped for tourism. You can find high quality lodges everywhere that will cost you probably $15 per night.

I've always loved Siberia and sometimes I kind of fantasise about moving there but I assumed it would be too difficult to get residency/citizenship. How did you get in there? Is it easy enough? Do you have local connections? What's Russian immigration law/admin like, basically, is what I'm asking.

I married a Siberian girl but I live there on/off using the tourist visa. If you're american, you can get a 3 year unlimited entry visa, stay up to 6 months at a time. Residency I would get through via the marriage but I can't start that until I can commit to living there for 5 years straight.

I'm sure there are procedures for something like "accredited investors" to migrate and live. I wouldn't move there and expect to do a work visa because Russian wage-slave life is pretty brutal. I think you have to be set before you move.

I'm going to continue to grow my online business.
