Encrypt it using AES-256, back it up on multiple cloud providers. Use random sounding file names that disguise the fact it’s a seed phrase for extra obscurity. Back the encrypted file up on local media such as CD’s and HDD’s (no flash memory since it has higher chance of data loss). Store the encryption key in multiple locations that are separate from the encrypted files. Possibly go as far as burying it in a public location.

It all depends on how much money you have invested in crypto. Would you feel comfortable with $10-20k cash in that same lockbox? Would you feel alright with $100k in a fireproof safe? What about those people on biz who have upwards of $500k in crypto? Personally I believe that your level of security/redundancy should take into account what amount of funds you are trying to protect. Also consider what you would do/how you would access your funds if you had to leave your home with no preparation and no way to return.
My personal way of protecting my private keys is a multilayered approach with multiple wallets.

Here is my hint as to how I protect my key and it allows you to hide it in plain sight, phone, email and computer without risk.
Get yourself a book, for example James Joyces Ulysses, or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles. Find your seed phrase words in said book. Circle the word to their right or left. Write down as follows (you can freely type this and save it on your computer):
Wallet Number-No. of seed phrase word (1-24)-Page Number (0001)-Circled word number from start of page. It will look like this after. 11002816 12086718 etc. Freely write these numbers wherever you want. All you need to remember is the book and that your word is not actually the circled word but the one next to it or three words away etc.
No one will be able to access it. You can freely send the numbers to multiple fake email addresses. Save them in the cloud. Save copies on your phone and computer. Write them on your fridge. Tattoo them on your arm. Post them on message boards.
Even if I was stuck in a foreign country, as long as the internet exists, I could purchase a copy of my chosen book and determine my seed phrase (most of these books are available online for free).

these are mostly retarded.
Most of these methods dont add nearly as much security as you think, causing you to let you guard down and then put your (badly) obfuscated seed phrase on your computer and cloud storage. it will get brute forced if you do this.

some rules:
keep it offline.
keep it in the form of your 24 words
treat is as the nuclear codes to your wealth - create multiple copies and store them securely.

stamp on metal plates and hide one in an innocent place in your house, your parents house, possibly a third location thats in a property you own.
Now that the phrase is only in meatspace, you only have to worry about people irl knowing to look for a seed phrase, so:
dont tell anyone you own crypto (otherwise an attacker will just beat you with a pipe until you tell them, doesnt matter how encrypted it is)
hide your phrase somewhere inside where no thief would ever look

Wait a minute, so the hardware wallet only picks the 24-word seed from this list of 2000 words?
I thought it issued completely random words from the more than 150k words in the English language
So what's stopping someone from finding a wallet/keystore and just brute-forcing combinations from this 2000-word list to access someone's wallet? Shouldn't that be possible and not take very long?

maybe being retarded but I don't follow it to be honest

Assuming that all the 'random' words used are valid words (bip-0039)....

If you're putting a seed word in the same position in the 50 words every day or in any sort of easily remembered pattern then it could be bruted by someone trying all manners of elementary patterns

If not then you've still got to remember the pattern or the words which you might forget

Why are you taking 44 days to do this? If it's to avoid a keylogger then just do it on an offline machine

>If you're putting a seed word in the same position in the 50 words every day or in any sort of easily remembered pattern then it could be bruted by someone trying all manners of elementary patterns
So let's say for example that my birthday is September 14th, i.e. 9-14
And my phone unlock code is 2-4-6-8
Both of these are burned into my brain
So putting them together, that's 9-14-2-4-6-8
What if, within a mass of random-order bip-0039 list of 2000 words that I type out myself, at some point I put one of my seed words as the 9th word in the list, then the next seed word as the 14th word after that, and so on while repeating that same 9-14-2-4-6-8 pattern, until all 24 seed words are in?
Can someone still somehow detect that pattern, and all those seed words via brute force?

>create a blank text file on my computer
on your computer = vulnerable to attackers
>once a day, add 50 completely random words to the text file and save
>do this for about 20 days until I have a huge mass of 1,000 random words
they wont be random. humans are terrible at actually being random.
>start up the hardware wallet for the first time then get my 24-word recovery seed
>write it down on a piece of paper
why not just stop here, you have a seed offline and secure. tuck it in the first page of your favorite porno mag that you hide under the bed.
>once a day type out 50 random words to add onto the text file, except one of those words is actually one of the words from the recovery seed
>repeat this for 23 more days until all 24 words from the list are now in the text file
>all 24 words are now placed in a certain pattern among the other random words in the text file, so that only I would be able to pick out the right words in the right order from the text file by memorizing that certain pattern, as opposed to memorizing random words
honestly it'd be easier to memorize the random words than the pattern. Plus, the random words you type in to the file would have to be from the same worlist as seed words, otherwise i could just extract words from your file that are on the wordlist & i'd have your seed.
> in case my computer has a keylogger or is being remotely monitored
hence keeping it offline
>zip and password-protect text file with a simple password with numbers and special characters that I can easily remember
if this is secure, just zip & password protect (assuming the encryption is secure) your actual seed in a txt doc, memorize the encryption key - this is what OGs do with wallet.dat

>>zip and password-protect text file with a simple password with numbers and special characters that I can easily remember
elaborating on this, if the password is simple, it's not secure, so you may as well not do it.
This is what i mean when i say you'll trick yourself into thinking you seed is secure just because the process sounds complicated to a human.
the password will need to be at least 128 bits of randomness, which would look something like this length:
>7bb1-c1a5-a566-8d4d-3f23-48e1-6164-f24d
again, if you cant memorise that, and you're going to have to write it down, you may as well have just written your seed down and kept it.

If the attack vector youre guarding against is a keylogger, keep it offline. Then just keep your crypto anonymous & youre protected from people trying to find a seed phrase in your apt.
