22308867 No.22308867 [Reply] [Original]

I'm 2 years into a software engineer position and now I'm getting fat, I'm tired all the time, and my back and neck are always in pain. The body was not built to work at a desk every day. Are there any better alternatives?

Unless your job is literally shoveling food down your throat, there is no excuse to be fat

Also if you are coding so much that your neck and back hurt, you might be coding too much.

get a standing desk to help with your back and neck pain. dev money is good but it is soul crushing work. start working on an exit plan, you dont want to code for the rest of your life.

I'm a dev and think this sentiment is ridiculous. I've worked soul crushing work, in a warehouse and a hotel kitchen while in school. THAT is awful, soul crushing work that wagies do as adults. Dev work is just work like any other, it's tedious, but it pays well and is comfy. I would never want to go back into labor.

Look into becoming an ex-programmer like seemingly everyone else these days.

I'm hoping to transition out with a combo of SWE salary + crypto + own business (this one is not an active pursuit rn).

just go to the gym regularly and lift. i got fat in my second year too (added 50 pounds to my normal weight) but I've since gone back down thanks to COVID forcing me to cook more and being more diligent about going to the gym 3 times a week

Take walks often and stretch. You'll also need to start going for runs after work or the gym. See if your job will get you a standing desk too (one that can be sitting or standing). Gives you a change at least.

I mitigate this with: (a) a standing desk that can easily toggle between sitting and standing (b) a treadmill 5 feet away from my desk (c) a weight bench 5 feet away from my desk. Make it a habit to use both daily and alternate sitting/standing throughout. I'm in my 40s and have never been in better shape.

Buy a good office chair instead (Herman Miller for example) and not some ripoff gaymer chair, and remember to take regular short breaks walk around stretch your legs throughout the day.

You can literally work coding like 5-6 hours straight - 2 hours exercise - 1 hour eating - another 5-6 hours - long +1 hour walk

Not saying this is ideal existence, but you don't get some fucked up back pains. You getting fat is all about your diet, not because of software engineering. You just literally need to exercise
