It'll always have an ERC-20 plugin but the host contract is likely to to base on a higher throughput system. There's talk in the whitepaper that's mostly hand-waving about keeping it simple till they can't, and in that timeframe we'll see a lot more maturity out of non-ETH platforms. But the ERC-20 standard may be retained, in which case yes. It'll still be one.
