22181682 No.22181682 [Reply] [Original]

Here's the scoop. By December I'm going to have between $10-$15k cash on hand. My father has retired to a country where the USD goes very far. I plan on joining him overseas and I would like to make some money to support my lifestyle from my bamboo hut, and after mocking up some budgets I can live pretty comfy making $500-$600 a month. So I ask anons how would I go about doing this? I should tell you i would like to make the amount I said but really any bit would be ok as well. I have zero experience and knowledge about anything investing wise.

Just invest in something that will rise in value then sell it once you've made profit.

Anon's in the general thread were telling me about REITS and how they are perfect for me because they pay out monthly and it's low risk.

Is it because when the world opens up airfare is going to jump significantly?

>> No.22182032

>>22181986
look at every single airlines stock history. They are low low low across the board compared to what they are usually and they have proven bulletproof in terms of government bailouts. Some speculate that airfare will never be the same post corona but I say no fucking way it's going to go up at LEAST 3x 4x

That makes sense. But do keep in mind I am looking to get on a stable fixed income if at all possible.

>>22182127
Okay, but do keep in mind you will probably lose a bunch of money if you do that because stable incomes of $500 a month from 10k start up capital is a little silly. It's cool your new, but you can't expect miracles- just continually make good decisions.

Honestly this is where I start with most financial advice be it buying a house or when I set up my stocks ISA and began learning about investments.

I can say investing in long term With a diverse portfolio and not trying to make quick money has worked really well for me, the only times I’ve lost out is when I’ve strayed from that principle and taken more risk or got caught up in hype.

If you split your invests between well run funds put a lump sum in and then a regular amount a month (I use HL) and smart stock picks whilst continuing to put a couple of hundred quid aside a month To make more picks you will see that your portfolio will grow in value.

Not many companies are paying out dividends at the moment but it seems like that’s kind of what you’re after, highly doubt you could make 5-600 month from 10-15k, I would suggest using your savings to spend a month or two over there with him and enjoy yourself a little and when you’re back and have it out of your system start investing regularly so you’re set up for the future.

Hmm, investing in SPY is probably the safest bet (historically pays out around 10% APY), that's going to be really hard to beat unless you devote a lot of time to investing and have the discipline for it. The market is so fucked up right now however that I'd probably just slowly put money in (DCA).

How are you going to work in a different country?

Thanks anon. I sort of figured that what I was after was a little lofty. I was speaking to some.anons in the /smg/ and one of them had told me to look into REITS and it was more or less feasible I could.male 200 bucks a month if I played my cards right.

Yeah a couple people have old me about investing in SPY is a safe choice.

Making 500/m from a 15k investment is not reasonable. For reference a CD only pays out about 2% a year. You'd need about 10x that for that income reliably.

You're going to get bored doing nothing though, so look into work you can do remotely.

>> No.22184820

>>22184720
You're exactly right about me being bored doing nothing so that's why I thought I would drop by and see about investing but it seems like it's not a good fit for me, which I figured. I have looked into teaching English but it seems rather scammy and saturated so I do not have high hopes for that.

Make sure you have a diverse portfolio and really research each stock you buy before doing so. If you invest in REITS just beware that you will most likely not grow your initial investment much, reits pay out 70-90% of their profits as dividends so they have very little capitol to expand with, this leads to low share price gains.

Being that a lot of people are enjoying working from home at the moment, there could be a lot less demand for office rentals after Covid is over, that’s something to consider if you want to invest soon.
Housing rentals may be down due to recessions and unemployment. Also something to consider (even reit dividends will probably be low right now but you May get a nice price to
Buy stock).

Good luck with it all anon.

As for investing, you can try ThinkorSwim which is free software, it offers a way to trade with fake money, so before you come anywhere near real money you can wait until you are profitable with fake. It's about being disciplined and learning trading strategies. All about taking advantage of little tricks that you master in particular investments.

Or check out web development, you'd need to learn Javascript/HTML/CSS but you can put a portfolio together (get a job) on your own, you can freelance, learn at your own pace and if you're good at it make a ton of money actually (6 figures).
