as someone who in relative terms is still new to crypto, it seems kind of like Ethereum is significant because it provides an ecosystem where a lot of different things can flourish but it is flawed enough that it will ultimately be subsumed by other things that do what Ethereum does better and easier. DeFi, for example, seems like it has hit a stumbling block with gas fees, and I can see how in a year or two perhaps these same concepts will migrate to other platforms that are cheaper.

As far as what the Ethereum killer will be, it is probably too early to tell but Cardano seems to be making progress in that direction, held back only by its slow pace of development, weird/shadowy backers in IOHK and weird megalomaniac director Charles Hoskinson. I feel like XRP/XLM/OXT have potential. Bitcoin's lightning network will be very useful.

But for now Ethereum seems like it's the best game in town and it's pretty fun participating in the Uniswap wild wild west, where fortunes are made and lost overnight and nobody knows what the fuck is going on. I'm sure in a year or two we will look back at this time fondly.
