A temp job I worked put me on electronic assembly and next thing I knew a couple jobs later im a fucking level II repair tech. I also write documentation when things are slow so I can have easy references for myself and customers. It's at the point now where customers have a problem, and I shoot them an email with my doc which helps them fix their problems 8/10 times.

I got a degree in Management Info Systems which is like the bastard child of management and CS. I think the most important thing I did was get an internship in my 3rd year and I started looking for a job the first semester of my Senior year. I actually took a pay cut to get that internship (17.50 at pizzahut as a driver --> 11/hr as a help desk tech for my university) but the resume experience made me stand out (and my high GPA). CS is a great degree to have but equally important is experience. Honestly your repair tech experience will help in getting into IT as long as you can spin it on your resume as problem solving and shit.

I got my own office / workshop at my gov work and I'm surrounded by computers (IT Tech). I set up commercial wifi with my own Fiber AP in my office. Built about 3 desktops with unclassified images that I can fug around on. Also got a full size fridge of course. No one knows what I do and I'm not supervised. I have the choice to work from home.

If you're American and want government work look up US DoDD 8570 and 8140 certification standards. Any certs for IAT II can get you a cozy job. And you don't need to have any prior knowledge or experience because DoD systems are all proprietary and made with super-duper secret sauce, do you learn what you need on the job.

All I do is code automated tests for a couple of mobile apps within the same project, which is quite mature at this point and there is not much new to automate. I just say I worked on refactoring and stability improvements most of the time, but really haven't done anything the past 6 months at least. Only good thing is I have Fridays off but now all the other gov workers in my department work from home while I'm fucking stuck here in the field for 10 hours (5 hours mostly sitting in the truck all day though).
So I can't complain but I can say I ha e it good cause the pay is shit and rumors were that most of the people now working from home were always showing up late before corona so they probably arnt working much now during corona. Stupid engineers. We always get blamed when their shit goes wrong too when it's not.

It's now 1pm... Too late to do start or do anything now, so just dick around on my computer or have a nap.

Network engineer here. I've built the network pretty well and nothing really breaks. We have basically no budget so forget upgrading or anything of that sort. I moved from software development to devops
