do you aboslute niggers not understand that the gas limit is the computation wrok youre asking the miner to do and the gas price is the price per unit of computation? These defi tx have a lot of changes to the blockchain with variables and operations so are expensive. If you set 900k gas limit and the miner sees "weve used up 850k so far, and theres no way im gonna do all the work your tx requires with the remaining 50k youve allwoed for me, im gonna revert it all", he will still charge you for the work you made him do.

Is my understanding right?
That currently, when running a smart contract it calls Ethereum api functions to do things like swap tokens, which costs eth, but complex contracts also call api functions to create variables, evaluate conditions and so on, and calling these Ethereum functions also costs eth, making complex contracts costly to run.
Is the point of Arbitrum then that the contracts can execute off chain in such a way that creating variables etc can happen cheaply, and then then for the final result (swapping some tokens) they go back to the ethereum chain?
This would reduce ethereum from a smart contract execution layer to a settlement layer for custom tokens.
But that might not even be a bad thing for ethereum, focusing on its core strength. Bitcoin is the ultimate, store of value, settlement layer, then eth for all the custom tokens, then chainlink+Arbitrum becomes the smart contract layer.
Am I completely off here?

There's some bug in geth regarding gas estimation. I looked into code but I don't see a reason, they always return gas limit that succeeded in local execution.

you don't need to cancel.
Enable advanced nonce control in settings->advanced.
Now make a new transaction with the same nonce as the earliest pending transaction (you can see the nonce either in metamask, or on etherscan). If the gas fee is at least 10% higher it's going to replace it.
It can be anything, including a transfer.
