Why does the market go up and down? Why is it not just flat or slowly uptrending? Serious question.

there are too many lazy shitposters on this board.

do you mean why do prices from from a technical perspective?

there are 2 main types of orders: market and limit. market orders consume liquidity, limit orders provide it. i can provide more info if thats the type of answer you were looking for

1) profit taking
2) stop hunting
both of these have to do with market microstructure and liquidity events and are not fundamental reasons
3) but mostly price trying to find fair value. if the price is at a level investors think is good, it will waffle in a range for a while until a new fair value is discovered.

causes why fair value may change: fundamental factors (market reports like consumer CPI, NFP report, etc). market events like CEO being charged with fraud, competing product taking over the market, etc.

moving a market up or down is expensive, so a catalyst is needed. once smart money discovers the catalyst and starts buying/selling, normie investors see a trend forming and start buying/selling in that direction too. the combined power of smart money and retail will inevitably move the prices in one direction.

the pullbacks you see in a trend are usually profit taking

Is called a cycle, stocks are worth what people think they're worth, if they're over bought the price go up if their over sold the price go down, price go down people see good value and buy, price go up people see bad value and sell, the stock price lays somewhere in between

>> No.22074883

Laymen term...okay go on ebay and pick something at random from inside your room and ask for $5k for it. You might even get a buyer but unlikely. That value of that item does not equate to that but it can shift prices across the board. People will game off eachother's expectations. The dip happens when reality kicks in and you realize the value was always was low. The stock market, in some ways, is like having a big meta argument about an anime on some forum. It is really just one big circle jerk and occasionally something steps in from the outside world to wake people up to reality. It isn't that you can't get something from it and it is the best we have, just understand that a good chunk of investing in the market is being just a bit of a scammer if you want to come out ahead.
