To all the newfags buying into "chainlink": The real chainlink (as in the tokens that will actually be necessary for node operation and the tokens that will actually be paid to node operators) is known as shadowlink, which was created via unpublicized fork in early 2018. Although the chainlink concept purports to be a "decentralized" oracle, it by necessity requires a degree of human oversight, and so the initial plan was to limit the distribution of chainlink tokens to a controlled number of individuals and entities - a large group to be sure but not anywhere near what happened in actual practice (purely by mistake). This is why they on purpose made the ICO super expensive (300 ETH) to buy in.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, 4chan latched onto chainlink early and the token proliferated too rapidly (and, in particular, to many "untrusted" parties) as a result. The team simply didn't plan on 4chan members to pool their ETH and buy in too, and then spread the info about chainlink's potential. The powers that be didn't even want the token listed, but it was an erc-20 token, and exchanges don't need permission to list them. Binance listed it anyway (back before they were as popular as they are now), and the bottom fell out of the original "controlled distribution" scheme. Obviously tokens couldn't be retrieved from purchasers, so a page was taken from the ETH/ETC/DAO fiasco, with one critical change - the protocol fork wouldn't be made known to the masses.
