>work at company 3 years.
>backend dev using ancient fucking language
>comfortable with it now, can pretty much solve any problem that comes up on the backend
>keep wanting more full stack dev
>company keeps telling me that they will switch me to another team so I can learn other parts of the stack, get experience. They've said that for 3 years.
>train girl who started a year an a half ago on backend tech
>she learns quickly and is savvy, they move her to a different team but she still works on only backend
>puts in crazy hours but is loud as fuck and a little bit aggressive
>she quickly gets raises
>we were both at 74k after last raise.
>this raise she goes to 83k.
>I go to 78k
>2k bonus for both of us. Fine whatever
>stock units, that normally you get at 3 years, we both get. Me at 3 years, her at a year and a half
>she still asks me and my partner questions about backend, questions that an advanced dev would know
>I still go and find code she wrote. Its incomplete and wrong. Doesnt even run.
>her manager doesn't understand the backend so he doesn't know that its wrong.
>I bring it up, she says its a 'rushed job' and she will fix it when she comes back from vacation.

Why the hell am I still answering questions for a dev I trained who won't even take the time to run the code or complete it when she makes more money than I do even if I trained her.

I need to gtfo of this company. Its fucking unfortunate because a raise is suppose to be a good thing but this company still manages to fuck it up

>Why the hell am I still answering questions for a dev I trained
because every day you wake up and you get ready for work and you go in and perform labor for the exact compensation and work culture you are currently receiving and experiencing
that is the only reason.

>> No.21910684

Well when the damn code is written without a single thought and not tested before the sign off for vacation, that just makes me mad.

Just because she puts in more hours doesn't mean all those hours are productive.

I need to leave this company. I'm just stuck in niche right now and need to pick up some experience with other tech, i guess I will keep heading in that direction while I work.

So tell them exactly this and leave. They’ll be the ones fucked with a retard writing their code and you’ll be working somewhere new.

Thats the plan I guess. Management is not organized at all.

She isn't even retarded, she just fucking rushes through shit and is loud about all the troubles she has at work. So when I see code like this she wrote, it means she didn't think 2 seconds about it.

>> No.21911117

Sucks man. How big is your company?

I jumped ship after 3 years even though it was a comfy place because that was the only way to get the raise I wanted. That 2-3 years job hopping isn’t a meme for sure.

Its pretty big, they have become massive over the few years I've worked for them. The were bought out once over a year ago. I am wondering how soon they can get bought out again so those stock units become realized. A lot of people quit after they were bought out last time and I think its because they had a lot of money to quit with.

Idk 3 years, 4 years makes no difference. I just need to start using my time wisely and pick up more frontend skills that will transfer well.

I swear this is what fucked me. I am quiet at work. I keep my head down and get the job done. No complaining outside talking to my partner and even then its not real complaing just normal ranting.

But because I didn't go out of my way to be social and go to these work events even when I am very involved with whoever I am working with at the time, they dont consider me as much. Another thing is they don't like wfh, 75% of the office is back already, even though we can all do the job from home with no problem.

Luckily my team is small enough and quiet enough we are still wfh. I like it a lot better desu. Less distraction, no fucking break room chitchat

My mind doesn't work that way.

Also even if it did. Risk outweighs reward. Tbh i don't even have to do that. Im one of about 5 people who do backend work and the whole company depends on the backend, and they are massive. They would be able to replace me but it will not be easy.

My manager understands the backend so I think he grades our work my conservatively.

I have demanded a raise. Listen its easy enough to just say that. But I'm being paid a lot of money. I'm fucking comfy somewhat, still nervous with the coronavirus affecting the job market, and am finally starting to stack money. I do not want to appear hostile and aggressive to them. I will continue to plan and think about this. They mentioned more raises in 4 months. I doubt she will get another one they just wanted her to be quiet. Think of it from their perspective, you've been doing x job for y pay so far, so why would they increase that if they didn't have to? If they are getting a good deal why change it? Management usually deals with all sorts of random fires and issues so the thought of "is anon being paid enough" probably doesn't enter their mind very often.

If they aren't going to budge then unfortunately you have to ask yourself if there is any point staying where you are vs going somewhere else. I'm going through a similar thing, I like where I work but they have dragged my promotion out to the point of ridiculousness and I am starting to apply for other jobs.

Like I kept my head down and worked hard. I do good work. I expect to be compensated well. 78k is nothing to laugh at. But now there is weird dynamic where a lower level dev who comes to me with questions is actually making more money than me and it is throwing me off.

What you have to evaluate is: is it a good deal?

If you're getting paid above the industry standard and the company is fucking up by paying her even more, stay. It's their mistake.

If you're getting screwed by being paid less, then leave.

Who cares about what she's getting, if it's a fair deal for you. Mind you, do try to negotiate because otherwise you won't get a raise, but don't just move out of spite.
