21799644 No.21799644 [Reply] [Original]

I'm having a really hard time.

I keep getting told by doctors my structural kyphosis isn't severe enough for surgery, but cosmetically it's obvious the back of my neck and back is bent. I'm still working on new appointments because I think I qualify to be diagnosed with Schuermann's as three of my vertebrate are significant wedged. The x-rays all show loss of disc height, but because there's no fracture or it worsening (quickly), it's incredibly difficult fighting to get surgery to correct the curve.

Anyway, I've worked at the same desk job for 5 years always wearing layers and I desperately want to branch out but I've reached the point where I can't stand being in my body and only leave the house if I absolutely have to (before caronavirus for work and groceries, etc).

If you were at work and you saw someone with a big hunched neck and back what would you think? Am I just cursed or should I pretend everything is okay to look for a new job somewhere else?

I am so uncomfortable but I have developed enough skills to look for other jobs, my problem is I am so incredibly deformed I feel like a freak all the time and I have to keep working to make a living. I'm already planning on any new interviews saying outright what my physical limitation is instead of trying to hide it at my present job.

Go to physical therapy to learn about how to self-manage. Generally most people would need to stretch the anterior chest/pectoral musculature (we are push based), while strengthening the posterior back musculature through more pulling activities (rows, reverse flys, etc).

Generally learn proper sitting and standing postural positions, and spend more time in them. Don't let gravity wreck your shit.

Don't be a lazy fuck and expect surgery to fix your shit.

i have a degree in kinesiology and work for a physical therapist. You need to start stretchign and exercising NOW before you get old or else you will be fucked. I see it all the time.
Get a foam roller and stability ball and lay on that shit. You need to get your spine into extension. you need to do facepulls, reverse flys, chin tucks, everything dealing with postural correction.
Your hips are probably fucked up too.The spine counter balances with natural curves, so if your cervical spine is huge then your thoracic and lumbar are fucked too. Im willing to bet you have an anterior pelvic tilt as well. In which case you need to stretch your hip flexors and lower back while strengthening your glutes and abs.

>>21800765
athlean x is a fucking fraud. be careful. hes in it for the money. yes some info is good but he tries to be new and innovative when in reality exercise correction is nothing new and whats worked in the past still works now.

You could try your luck on /fit/, there's a handful of medfags. DO's seem more into preventative medicine and optimizing health that MD's who just want to cut and or drug people. Sports medicine and if you're willing to risk a quack I'd say chiropractor. They can be weird but some are legitimately good. If I had to guess on an exercise I'd suggest heavy front squats. If nothing else it helps develop musculature in the upper back and legs. The skeleton is not meant to support the body, it's just a frame. Muscles are what support us. It seems obvious but some people seem fine with putting all the stress on poor skelly. He tries his best but at some point it starts to give.
I had a lot of pain from shit posture. Squats did a lot to fix it, running didn't hurt either until I moved from treadmill to road and learned how fucked my form was when stress fractures left me limping for 2 weeks.

I was this -->||<-- close to getting cervical fusion surgery for "several cervical stenosis" until my yoga instructor gave me a simple 10 minute exercise.

I'm back to rolling BJJ and playing whatever sports I want now.

My experience is to never get surgery with these type of things. They are sympotmatic medicine and only get pushed because of perverse profit incentives
Take for instance the common rotator cuff injury that causes shoulder pain. There is no structural imbalance just a muscular imbalance but if you go through all the exercises without improvement they will give you a surgery where they remove the top of the shoulder causes an permanent irreversible weakness in your shoulder

do banded rotator cuff internal and external rotation on the your back same as the floor plate press

flexibility comes from more muscle mass. Like two rubber bands the one with a larger diameter will stretch further.

Same.

The idea is to strengthen the muscles around the joint to stabilize the joint. For the neck, you need to strengthen the upper back muscles to pull the head back into proper position. Any of those "forward head posture fix" videos will work. I saw huge improvements within a week, and I had been in so much pain I couldn't sleep.

OP listen to these guys, you might also want to fix your mental problem. You do not need outside intervention to save you. All you need is yourself. (Or someone who can see what's going on with your body mechanically. ie. what is short/tight + what opposing muscles are long/taut/weak.)

>> No.21801813

OP here

Thanks guys I saved the links and thread.

I want to try working out the areas more, but I think because the x-rays show disc height loss no matter what I do my spine won't extend enough to fix the curvature.

Imagine your upper back is wedged and you can't bend the C shape back to a straight line.

That said I absolutely need to exercise more, but only surgery will fix it.

tl;dr - I can get healthier but if I want to not be hunchbacked someone MUST perform surgery.

tl ; dr ; ps - my kyphosis is mid 60s, and they generally dont allow fusions unless you are over 80 degrees

OP, this. I had this problem, the surgeon told me I'd be in a wheelchair with no control of my bowels if I didn't get the surgery. (And oh by the way he had an opening next Tuesday but the next availability would be 4 months from now...)

Your muscles got you into this problem. They can get you out.
I did these exercises and saw massive improvement in a week. 5 years later, I'm 95% full speed. Still some pain, but just like a stiff neck from time to time. I still do the exercises every morning.

When your health improves, start attending yoga classes. Be sure to tell your instructor about your problems. They may give you some specific exercises.
