Well in Canada it died because our oil industry relies heavily on oil sands, which in turn require high oil prices. They were also the ones who hired the most graduates, so most of the people - especially the ones at the top of the class - who graduated in my year (2015) never actually ended up doing chem eng; a lot of them picked up a bit of Python and SQL and became data analysts, although that's a bit of a dead end position as far as I'm aware.

You are right about China just pumping stuff out though; I was at a conference once and all the old guys around the table (senior engineers working in hydrometallurgy) were bitching about how the Chinese kept outproducing and undercutting their plants.

if you study CS and then do small amounts of leetcode, you can get a FAANG job, which pays >200k after a year or two. unless you’re retarded, you will have enough money to pay $4.5k a month to live by yourself in a luxury apartment in SF, and still save six figures or close to it. software engineering jobs don’t even pay six figures at all for new grads unless they’re on large coastal cities which are barely less expensive than SF.

if your goal is accumulating guaranteed wealth with low amounts of work, other than buying link and rsr and checking etherscan wallets of insiders to buy things like yfi early, practicing leetcode and working at a top tech company is one of the best ways of doing it

I’m not American and didn’t study CS in college. I have a friend (from my country) who got accepted at an Ivy League university and now works in big tech but it’s extremely difficult to do that as a white foreigner. You need perfect grades (like top 0.5%) and dedicate almost all of your time to studying.
Since I turned 18 my dream hasn’t been to become a top tier wagie though. I want to make it on my own and be my own boss. I’d rather run a small comfy business that makes 50k/ year than be a 175k/ year wagie. I’ve managed to make it to ~$950k in my mid 20s (none of it is from crypto) and I’m pretty proud of that. Also, I’ve been able to do a TON of traveling. My job is very stressful though (don’t want to go into detail).. My plan is to quit once I hit $2MM and start a small comfy business. Sometimes I ask myself if it was a mistake to not just become a wagie (a LOT less uncertainty and you don’t have to stress as much about your future), but not being a wagie has allowed me to things that most people can only dream of, e.g. last year I was traveling for 4 months while working from my laptop.
